Rare Ships Month: Sarah/Harry
Harry Sullivan: a Naval doctor with an old-fashioned attitude
Sarah Jane Smith: a journalist with a feminist attitude
You'd think that could never work but you'd be wrong...
Robot
Harry and Sarah first meet in Robot when the Doctor regenerates, although Sarah probably takes more notice of him the second time they meet when Harry's been tied up in a cupboard by the Doctor. After Harry's failed attempt to impress by going undercover 'like James Bond' they end up tied up together.
At the end of the episode the Doctor invites first Sarah, then Harry on board the TARDIS.
Ark in Space
In Ark in Space it's Harry who is more worried when Sarah goes missing. When she's found and the three of them are trapped in an airless room he passes out on her shoulder.
Once the Doctor's saved them, Harry recovers first and puts Sarah on a nearby bed. When she comes round he says:
Harry: Steady on, old girl, steady on
Sarah: Harry...?
Harry: Yes, I'm here.
Sarah: Call me 'old girl' again and I'll spit in your eye.
However, she's smiling as she says it. Him calling her 'old girl' will be important later...
The Sontaran Experiment
When they teleport down to Earth, Sarah ends up in a ditch and Harry has to pull her out.
It's in this story, and only this story, that he calls her 'old thing. However, when she complains that she's not a thing he very diligently calls her Sarah all through the rest of the story. Interestingly, at no point does Harry ever call her Sarah Jane.
Genesis of the Daleks
They spend a lot of Genesis of the Daleks either split up or busy dealing with Davros and Daleks. But towards the end there's an interesting exchange between them:
Harry: You're not scared are you?
Sarah: Of course not!
Harry: I am.
Regardless of whether she's scared or not she's not admitting that to Harry.
Revenge of the Cybermen
Once they're back on the space station in Revenge of the Cybermen Sarah is infected and the Doctor has to teleport her down to the nearby planet of Vega, in Harry's arms.
On the planet they're tied up again, but Harry has a cunning plan to free them using the fact that they're chained up with gold, which is a soft metal:
Harry hammers at the cuff around Sarah's ankle
Sarah: Ow! Careful.
Harry: Sorry. It is flattening, though.
Sarah: So's my ankle.
Harry hammers some more
Harry: I think you might be able to get your foot through now.
Sarah: Let's have a go then.
He pulls at the cuff, she pulls at her leg
Harry: Come on, one more pull, it's coming.
Sarah: Hurts!
Harry: Tibias, or rather fetlocks like a carthorse.
Sarah: My ankle's aren't thick!
Harry: Come on, pull.
Later, Sarah gets the cuff round Harry's ankle open by using a stalactite as a lever
Harry: Maimed for life.
Sarah: Honestly, I don't know why you're complaining, I got you free.
Those exchanges do rather characterise a lot of their relationship and this episode is particularly good for their banter, now that they know each other well enough.
Terror of the Zygons
In Terror of the Zygons Harry's shot in the head and suffers a scalp wound. When Sarah finds out she looks really worried when she asks if he's all right. When the Doctor and the Brigadier go off to investigate what they're in Scotland for in the first place, Sarah stays at Harry's bedside. Sitting on the bed, in fact.
Later on, he's trapped in a cell in the Zygon spaceship, which she stumbles upon. The last time she saw Harry it turned out he was a Zygon in disguise, so she's understandably not sure about him this time.
She looks through the window of his cell and sees him.
Sarah: Harry!
He's been lying on the floor, but gets up when he hears her and runs over to the door.
Harry: Sarah. Well, come on, open the door. Look, Sarah, we've got to get out of here. Sorry, put your hand on the panel.
Sarah: Is it you?
Harry: What do you mean, is it me?
Sarah: Is it really you?
Harry: Well, of course it is. What on Earth's the matter with you, old girl?
Then she opens the door.
They sort of hug (he has his hands on her waist, she has hers on his arms, although she's holding a big torch with one hand)
Harry: I'm glad to see you because...
Sarah (at the same time): You realise... (whispers) Someone's coming
They hide in Harry's cell
When it's safe to go out again, they go in different directions, until Sarah reaches back and grabs Harry's arm to pull him in the right direction.
Afterwards, Harry chooses to go back to London by train, while Sarah goes with the Doctor in the TARDIS.
The Android Invasion
They don't see each other again until The Android Invasion when he's been tied up and she has to rescue him.
Although their relationship has a lot of teasing in it, there's more to it than that. The book, Wolfsbane is set just before Terror of the Zygons:
Harry was half in love with Sarah Jane Smith, and he didn't even know it.
Or perhaps he did know it, but had pushed the idea so far to the back of his mind that it no longer registered. They had a close and special friendship, but ultimately he was like the faithful family friend, and even more ultimately than that, he knew she found him a bit irritating.
But she was his ideal. And she'd spoilt him, because he judged everyone else against her without realising it.
Sarah's official bio tells us that they became more than just friends after she's left in Aberdeen:
However, she remained close to UNIT and in fact developed a romantic relationship with the UNIT medical officer at the time, Harold Sullivan.
I think I was a bit shell-shocked, so to speak, after I left UNIT. I was looking for a bit of stability in my life, and Harry is as stable as they come.
Lieutenant Sullivan also has fond memories:
Sarah's a ripping girl, and I was very flattered with her interest in me. She seemed to need me at the time, but I think we both knew, deep down, that it wouldn't last.
They parted as good friends and have remained so to this day.
The story Mutiny in Short Trips: Defining Patterns tells us that when Sarah gets back to Earth it's Harry she goes to see:
We'd gone out that first night - both got a bit tipsy
Their relationship takes a turn for the unusual in System Shock when Sarah and the Doctor end up in 1990s London and meet Harry there. After they've saved the world Harry has dinner with the Sarah from that time, which is in the epilogue of System Shock and repeated, with extra bits, in Millennium Shock. They haggle over who pays for the meal and he walks her to her car. After she goes he's:
distracted by his memories and the old emotions now brought to the fore again
although it doesn't say exactly what these emotions are, it does tend to point towards one conclusion.
The Sarah Jane Smith audio Buried Secrets establishes they Sarah and Harry have dinner every year at an Italian restaurant called Il Tartufo.
Sarah: Harry and I came here for dinner every year to catch up and talk about old times. [...] He always insists on pulling out my chair for me and makes a great fuss of ordering in Italian, but not very well. [...]
However, he goes missing, but she carries on their meals on her own, until she meets Will Sullivan, the step-brother Harry has never mentioned.
Will: I always got the feeling he was very fond of you, Sarah.
Sarah: Well, Harry was the big brother I never had. [...] I miss him, so much.
Then she cries.
Will gives some insight into Harry's nickname for Sarah:
Will: He once told me he likes to call women 'old girl' just to see their nostrils flare.
