Another Newbie

Hi all! Newbie here. My name's Laura or Laii. Take your pick. Not really to knitting. I know my basics :D The only thing is, hopefully, this scarf will be the first knitting project I will have successfully complete on my own. I'm looking on Amazon right now for better needles and some yarn. I want to find some yarn that will be heavy enough to keep me warm during the winter.

ANY and all suggestions are greatly appreciated :D

Also, which is better, straight or circular needles? I've only ever used straight before...
