Intro and question about needles

Hi...

Self-taught knitter and crocheter here. I can do very basic stitches in both, but I find it difficult to stay on task when it comes to large projects. (I have a half-finished knitted scarf and about one-third of a crocheted afghan packed away somewhere.) :/ So, I really like some of the smaller Who-themed projects I've seen around, and hope they provide me with enough inspiration to start working with yarn again.

Question about knitting needles: I will be traveling by plane in the US at the end of the year. According to the TSA website, knitting needles are allowed in carry-on bags; however, it also states that individual TSA screeners may use their discretion regarding metal needles. They recommend bringing an envelope with you so you can mail your needles home just in case. Are there any traveling knitters here who have encountered security problems? I might buy some wooden or plastic needles instead of metal, although metal is all I've ever used. Any recommendations or preferences for one over the other?
