Kyle and Hermione sat quietly together, in the library. Kyle wasn't even actually reading the book he had propped open. That is, he wasn't retaining the words his eyes were skimming over.
Hermione, on the other hand, was reading furiously. But was she actually retaining? Truth be told, her mind was aching with ways of boosting her grade, even though she knew well enough that there was nothing she could do. The pain of failure was only intensified by her friend's success. But she knew Kyle felt guilty as hell, and she hoped he knew she had forgiven him already.
The only thing that made her feel any better was the reassurance that Harry was doing better. She was positive that if he was back to normal, anything could happen from there. Together, they could all overthrow the unfair hierarchy that ruled the school. It was time to knock the Slytherins off their pedestal.
"Hermione?" Kyle asked softly, finally closing the book.
"Yes, she replied, looking up softly into his eyes.
"Let's stop for tonight." He definitely was pleading, no matter how casual his voice sounded. His eyes told it all. They always did. Hermione would know that.
She nodded, full heartedly agreeing. Studying for these upcoming exams would be of no use to her. Hermione had to focus on bigger, more important things. For once, Kyle and Hermione needed to focus on life's trials on such a grander scale, that they took walks at night pondering, rather than stayed up, cozy, reading.
And so they set off, tonight's topic focused solely on Dumbledore, who they so cunningly referred to as "he."
