Liars share with those they deceive
the desire not to be deceived.
--- Sissela Bok
I found that quote sickly ironic to him. Caiden is a pathological liar, the "boy who cried wolf" of his time. He has a habit of making up stories, or horribly exaggerating them. Though he believes that he should keep a "realness" to his stories that he tells. So it always seems as thought it is possible, even if there is exaggerations there. He hates being called on his lies, though, and he hates when people lie to him. He doesn't refer to his lies as "lies", he calls it "fabricating the truth". In other words, making up a story of things that happened.
He strives, daily, to entertain people around him. So he'll definitely be more than willing to make up things for those around him. As a result of his frequent "truth fabricating", he's become quick-witted and creative. And people find him very entertaining, but no one would trust him with a speck of dust - let alone a secret. And with good reason - you could just become the next character in one of his stories.
Aside from the liar aspect of him, Caiden is very nice, and when he smiles - it is genuine. And it is probably one of the few things people do trust of his. He adores his sister, mother, and father. And he's usually very honest with them unless it is to get out of trouble or his sister desires to hear one of his stories.
He has a rather bad reputation for the things he's said and stories he's made up. So he frequently gets called on things he says at home, even the true ones that may seem a little extraordinary.
They do also say, that if you lie long enough and tell enough lies, you might soon believe them yourself. And that happened to him on many cases.
[ biography ]
An average, and boring family life, with an average and boring family, which probably drove him to make up extraordinary stories at an early age. Even in Kindergarten, he used to tell classmates that his mother was really his stepmother, and that she had tried to lock him in the attic for a week, and not feed him[when in reality, he was simply grounded for drawing on a wall], and this spurred the initial investigation on his family. Which definitely made it less than boring for him. Once people found out that the stories he told seemed to be nothing more than lies, they just started to take them for stories.
When he was six years old, his sister was born, and he did adore her. From her earlier years, she seemed to enjoy the stories that he told, but grew up believing them to be fictional stories, nothing to be believed. His schooling years were average, befriending two classmates Willhem Caismois, and Jaysin Tapp. He didn't really excel, but he didn't seem to do poorly in any of his classes. But that was fine to him, he had other ways to stand out.
He started high school at Western Cadieux High School, approximately fifteen - twenty minutes by car from his home, but about a four hour walk. He only walked it once, and after that his dad started to drive him to and from school. At school, its when his abilities shined. He started to take a lot of creative writing classes, and drama, which - if anything - spurred that part of him that lied. He occasionally dated, but only briefly, throughout his Junior year, getting dumped once by a girl named Casey, who dumped him when he started to include her in his stories. [What can I say, he has no limits]. He remained friends with Willhem and Jaysin, though - they knew better than to accept everything he said as true.
Though, something funny happened his senior year. When driving home from school one day after a Spanish Club meeting, it was dark. And his car broke down. He sighed, kicked it a few times after getting out, then picked up his cellphone to get his dad to come get him. Which meant he'd have to wait probably thirty minutes. While waiting, off in the distance, he saw someone with large, silver wings [the most identifiable feature in the dark], seem like he was killing someone.
Not believing his eyes at first, he didn't say much to his dad when he was finally picked up. In fact, he was unusually quiet. When asked about it, he finally spoke up and said that he saw a "Winged guy kill someone".
His dad shook his head and took it as another of Caiden's stories.
As did most people. But he insisted, continued to tell the story, and was told so often that it had to be a lie, that he started to believe that maybe he was just seeing things. He started to think that maybe he had lost it and was just -- so convinced of a lie, that he thought it was true, and it wasn't...until he talked to his Psychology teacher.
A man who had worked in the nearby city of Seriux at Onze Asylum for the Criminally Insane, Liam Reynold. Who was hesitant then, to believe what Caiden saw. The two of them spent a lot of time confiding in each other the stories that they had.
Then Caiden finally built up the guts to go cross the border into Seriux, and see, maybe, what was going on with the next city over, and find out if what he had seen was really something that had happened. He's pulled from his first time over in Seriux.
[ world ]
Affreux Island is divided into many cities - very large cities. Caiden is from Cadieux, which is the more rural city save for the area surrounding the major college on the Island, CCU - Central Cadieux University. And it is right where the name says - the center of the city.
The only other city that makes an appearance in Caiden's life is Seriux, which is to the North West, and closest to where he lives and goes to school. This city is the largest on the Island. Seriux is where people with the Supernatural abilities and Unnaturals [non-humans] reside. It's divided into many districts.
Otherwise, it is a very modern world, set in 2010, and has access to much of this world's pop-culture [ie: comics, television shows, music], but not to others [fast food, restaurants], even though it seems to be on Earth for the most part. It's very much an "Alternate Earth".
Some locations he speaks of are ::
Western Cadieux High School - the high school he attends; 9-12.
Western Cadieux Junior High - the Jr. High school; his sister currently attends - grades 6-8.
Western Cadieux Elementry - the elementary school; grades k-5.
Central Cadiuex University - the biggest university on the Island; where he will be going the following year.
The Round - quite like McDonald's of our world. The nastiest, greasiest and most addictive foods come from here.
Onze Asylum for the Criminally Insane - Onze district. The biggest Asylum on the Island.
[ religion ]
Christianity is a minority in his world. A massive minority. They're rather polytheistic a people, with gods and goddesses that are [as of this moment] unnamed [for the most part, and the ones that are named are somehow related to Thylas, so will be remaining unnamed throughout for my own sanity and Caiden's]. Because Affreux was founded by people of supernatural abilities and non-humans alike, the beliefs they had carried on throughout the cities, even to those who were human.
