9 Weeks To 50: Blink

Sep 21, 2013 13:03

We're now in the top 10 of my 50th Anniversary countdown of aggregated poll results for Doctor Who Books, TV Serials & Audio Dramas, with number 9:

9. Blink

Doctor: 10th (David Tennant)
Companions: Technically Martha although plotwise Sally fills that role.
Aliens: Weeping Angels
Synopsis:
When Sally Sparrow goes to photograph Wester Drumlins she doesn't expect to stumble upon a mystery spanning almost a century. Who is the Doctor? Are these messages really for her? And was that statue always standing there?
Why is it so well loved?
1. The Weeping Angels, arguably the scariest and most iconic monsters since the Daleks, are introduced.
2. This is one of the earliest (7th by my count) stories to use time travel as a major plot point, not merely as a form of travel and something not to be messed with. Given that it plays a major role in 7 of the next 13 stories it could be said to have started the wibbly-wobbly-timey-whimy era.
3. The script is very sharp and shows a great understanding of what it means to be a Doctor Who fan.
4. But even stronger is Hettie McDonald's direction (just watch the angels in the attic sequence if you don't believe me).
5. Whilst the regulars get to have some of their best scenes all season, it is Sally, Larry and Billy who steal the screen.
Statistical Snippet
Due to the method of calculating rankings for newer episodes there may have been a downweighting in rankings for new-who episodes. When stories were rated only on a seasonal basis, they would be adjusted by an average difference I worked out. However, those at the top end tend to end up being reduced by less and those at the bottom by more. However, there is no hard and fast rule I can use to account for this and the difference should reduce over time.
