15 Weeks To 50: Just War

Aug 09, 2013 10:10

We're now into the top 20 of my 50th Anniversary countdown of aggregated poll results for Doctor Who Books, TV Serials & Audio Dramas, with number 15:

15. Just War

Doctor: 7th (Sylvester McCoy)
Companions: Benny, Roz & Chris
Aliens: None (Pure Historical)
Synopsis:
It is 1941 and Nazi forces occupy British soil. But this is not an alternative universe, this is the island of Jersey. There a superweapon that may change the course of the war is being tested and it may all be the fault of the Doctor.
Why is it so well loved?
1. It marks a real turning point for the book series, where the writers are determined to produce novels that are great in their own right, not merely as the spin-off to a TV series.
2. This story gives these characters some of their strongest characterisations, in particular Roz's storyline is fascinating.
3. It is dark. Really, really, really dark. Not in Doctor Who's usual horror style but looking at real life evil.
Statistical Snippet
The Second World War is the most popular conflict to be used as a setting, with 3 stories in the top 50 (and a 4th just missing out).
