We're almost into the top 20 of my 50th Anniversary countdown of aggregated poll results for Doctor Who Books, TV Serials & Audio Dramas, reaching number 22:
22. The City of the Dead
Doctor: 8th (Paul McGann)
Companions: Fitz, Anji
Aliens: The Elementals
Synopsis:
The Doctor is having nightmares, where a void threatens to consume him. But how does this connect to the strange happenings in New Orleans' magical community?
Why is it so well loved?
1. Lloyd Rose perfectly conjures New Orleans and shows off her meticulous research into magical communities.
2. The characters are at perhaps their best in the Eighth Doctor Adventures. The 8th Doctor is multi-layered (using the amnesia to explore his relationship with his past), Anji is both smart and funny, whilst Fitz is always a highlight.
3. The prose is beautiful and sets Lloyd Rose in the top tier of Doctor Who authors.
Statistical Snippet
This is the best loved story primarily set in America, 19 places above The Witch Hunters (although if poll results had been available when the countdown started the Angels Take Manhattan would have been between the two).
