41 Weeks to 50: Poll-of-Polls Countdown: The Witch Hunters

Feb 09, 2013 21:02

Continuing my 50th Anniversary countdown of aggregated poll results for Doctor Who Books, TV Serials & Audio Dramas, with number 41:

41. The Witch Hunters

Doctor: 1st (William Hartnell)
Companions: Susan, Ian & Barbara
Aliens: N\A (Pure Historical)
Synopsis:
Taking a holiday in 16th Century America seemed like a great diversion for the time travellers. However, when they learn that it is Salem in the 1690s, the Doctor is certain they must escape, whilst Susan is determined they stay.
Why is it so well loved?
1. It uses the Pure Historical mould of the first season to explore one of the most horrific chapters in American history in a way that is both intellectual and easy to comprehend.
2. It gives Susan the chance to develop and become the central character in the drama.
3. The conclusion can make you cry both tears of happiness and sadness.
Statistical Snippet
This is the only story containing the First Doctor to break into the top 50. The next nearest are The Daleks and The Aztecs at numbers 59 and 60 respectively.
