I'm still wary of Mathieson, if only because I didn't quite get the praise heaped on him by fandom last season. I mean, he wrote two top-notch stories no doubt, but crowning him showrunner-in-waiting as so many people seemed to be doing...?

I hear you completely regarding the haters, though. I honestly don't think some people are even watching the same show I'm watching, based on their reactions to some episodes. Fandom, eh?

Without wanting to sound like I'm judging anybody based on their age and appearance, I think Capaldi sells the angst better because he convinces more as somebody who's led a long and eventful life and harbours more than his share of pain and regret. Weirdly, Matt Smith could do it too, in spite of being a mere pup, although he generally had less angst to portray. Different actors are just better at doing different things, I guess.

No, the Pompeii reveal was relatively painless, but I don't think it was something that really needed to be addressed. Just like it never crossed my mind that the thirteen regenerations thing would ever be something that would actually impact upon plotting, but I was wrong about that too. ;) Certain fans just shout loudly about this sort of thing and need to be dealt with, I guess.

Why did the Sixth Doctor choose to look like the Gallifreyan guard (Commander Maxil) who shot the Fifth Doctor in "Arc of Infinity"? To remind himself that Time Lords are jerks?

XD That's brilliant. The other good explanation I've seen online is that, considering Maxil's undoubted sartorial flair he was reminding himself to dress better in his next incarnation...
