Bown Marrow Registry - help save a life

May 28, 2009 10:33

This website http://www.dkmsamericas.org/ allows you to join the bone marrow registry for free.
Normally is costs $65 to join.

Basically, they send you a form with some long qtips and you swab your cheeks and send it in.  Your info and HLA type (immune system stuff...what has to be 'matched' in organ donation) go into the system, and if you ever match, you can save someone's life.

The more people the better, as it's VERY hard to find matches outside of family members.  Additionally, people from mixed ethnic background are highly encouraged to join because it's very rare to find matches for them...so again...the more the better.

My friend in med school just received an email about a girl at Yale med school whose leukemia just came back.  She's of mixed racial background, and her chances of finding  a match are REALLY low...so yeah, please join and maybe you can save a life.

And please, spread the word.
