1. Labyrinth
I literally can't remember how I discovered Labyrinth; I think I got tired of not understanding all the references everyone made to this movie, so I decided to watch it. While it's unbelievably cheesy, it still has its charm. I also really admire this fandom's stamina; Labyrinth came out over twenty years ago, and the fandom's still going strong! And the percentage of quality fan fiction and fan art coming out of this fandom is unusually high to boot, due in no small part to the room for sequels. I think my favorite thing to come out of this fandom is
Pika-la-Cynique's
Girls Next Door.
2. Hetalia
HETALIA. Where do I begin? I'm not as active in Hetalia fandom as I used to be, mainly because most of the BNFs I was following have gone on hiatus, but I still hold Hetalia close to my heart. And someday, I will finish my U.S. state-tan! What started out as just a web comic about personifications of nations has turned into a phenomenon, with fans creating their own characters and plots. (Including big fan projects like Latin Hetalia and I Am Matthewian!) I also feel like it's brought people together, as cheesy as it sounds, perhaps more than most fandoms due to the very nature of the web comic.
3. Clamp
I've been a fan of Clamp's various series about as long as I've been a fan of Sailor Moon; I still have TokyoPop's original printing of Card Captor Sakura! Card Captor Sakura and Magic Knight Rayearth helped define the magical girl genre for my generation, but their more recent works have earned a reputation for being completely FUBAR. While I feel like Clamp has a problem with striking a balance between navel-gazing and plot, ESPECIALLY in their more recent works, I still love their work for having a lot of heart. Their most recent work is Gate 7, which you should totally check out if you haven't already! (And I really need to read or catch up on a lot of their work! Most of their older titles were already out of print by the time I discovered them and hell if I know what's been going on in Tsubasa and xxxHOLic since I picked them up last.)
4. Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children was my introduction to Final Fantasy. Needless to say, I was unbelievably confused. Because we didn't really have a console in the house until my parents bought a PlayStation 2 when I was in junior high, my first Final Fantasy was actually Final Fantasy X, and I loved everything about it, from the characters to the story to the gameplay to the music, though the voice acting was a bit lackluster for a few characters. I was instantly hooked, and I tracked down every game I could find. I've now played, though not necessarily finished, every main series Final Fantasy game except FFXI and FFXIV. (And I find it ironic that a sequel served as my introduction to the series, and now I'm almost as critical of the sequels as a hardcore old school Final Fantasy fan.) I want to fangirl more here, but I don't know how to put it into words!
5. Childfree
I've known since I was a child that I never wanted children, at least not children of my own. I'm still not sure why, though given the deep-seated nature of my desire not to have biological children, it's possible I might be tokophobic. However, I thought that having children was a requirement, so I would talk about adopting children instead. It wasn't until my youngest sister was born and I became more active online that I realized I didn't want to have children at all and that I didn't have to. Because I live in the Bible Belt, I still get people telling me that I'll change my mind, but I've felt this way for a decade now, so I doubt I'll change my mind.
6. Don Bluth
Don Bluth! <3 (I actually knew Don Bluth movies weren't Disney movies even when I was really young; I never understood how people got them mixed up.) Anyway, I really only liked Don Bluth for Thumbelina and Anastasia when I was a child, but as I got older I found more of his older work and I noticed how much better it was in comparison to the stuff he was churning out during my childhood. Even though he's not as good as he once was, I still respect him for creating beautiful animated films that really pushed the envelope in terms of content for a family audience.
