What is that moment when you first hear the thoughts of another and want to claim them as your own? I remember it happening a few times. Maybe I shouldn't mention the names--out of shame--of the people that elicited this reaction in me, but what the hell. I can list them because I usually rescind my adoration. Actually, the purpose in this quick distillation of the swarm of my thoughts is Bill Hicks. At another time I can get into his beliefs and discuss things along those lines. At this time I want to quickly take note of the discussions that surround his legacy. There is one subset of people who undoubtedly agree with what he said and champion his ideas as a single sliver of light and truth in a society surrounded by the opposite. They suggest that those not in concord with Bill are stupid, ignorant Americans who cannot handle a painful veracity. They say that certain people don't like him or will not agree with his beliefs because what he said was too opposed to the government and therefore he is dangerous. But, while that might have some validity, his ideas are readily available and accessible. You can buy his DVDs at major entertainment warehouses like Best Buy, Tower Records, Circuit City et al. They are out there. The same things said about his danger are said about people like Chomsky and Howard Zinn and William Blum and Michael Moore and Al Franken and other like-minded individuals. But their ideas are easily available and open to the public. Chomsky has become something of a pop-culture icon in college circles, Blum sold a large quantity of books on amazon.com, Zinn has sold over a million copies of his People's History, Moore's success is unnecessary to repeat and Franken has his own tv show. These so-called revolutionary, harmful ideas aren't hidden, they aren't stamped out. It's like people on the left want to proclaim their ideas as subject to the same kinds of censorship controls as were found in Stalinist country or the world envisioned by Orwell. But, these are ideas are not hidden. On the contrary, they're everywhere. Look half-heartedly and you'll find them. Anyone can read their truths. Even someone like Michael Savage, the right's great radio pundit, likes to call himself a lone-voice, a brain from another time, someone out of place because of the immense truth of his ideas. He likes to say that even though he commands millions of listeners and has had several best-selling books. Not to make too many comparisons between Hicks and Savage, but this one is apt. These people want to applaud themselves for being outside of the stupid majority of people, like they have access to a correctness not present in the mainstream. I can recall many occasions where I have heard people complain about the state of the government, critiques I can feel akin and relate to, but they always come down to feeling powerless and not understanding why other people do not share the same ideas. The conclusion is always the Others' ineptness and detrimental cranial capacity and their own ability to filter out bullshit and come away with golden nuggets of absoluteness. But, hey, how did you figure this out, why are you so smart and how come you can find a whole community of people with the same beliefs as you? Where did that come from? How come you know so much more than the average person? Wherein lies your truth? It's not like you suffered great hardships and found out things unavailable to others and because of that you constitute a threat. Once again it always seems that there's an implicit comparison to totalitarian systems where anything anti-government became silenced. Except, here, there is no silence. Your supposedly caustic ideas have a place to go, they take up tangible space in discussion. I do not fully comprehend the attitude. There's a consensus that Americans have little intelligence when it comes to the rest of the world, but, even if that is true, how come there are so many Americans who count themselves outside of that mass of people?
I don't understand it.
Where is change located?
How come I can't find any mushrooms?
