Yay, Toron and Vicky! Hope Farallon and Onci are doing well - when I moved out of San Diego, I completely lost contact with the SCALF crew. (I think I can blame Onci for me getting my domain, actually - she pointed out how all the good domains were getting snapped up, so it seemed like the right time to ensure I had a place on the web to call my own. Bit scary to think it'll be coming up for its 18th anniversary this year!)
And of course, I remain deeply grateful to the seal for letting me try out Red, his first solo fursuit creation, back at CF4. Ye gods, that was a memorable day indeed. I knew it looked like it'd be fun, and it was, so very much. I had to ask if there was any way I might be able to give Red a home - and, amazingly, he agreed, for a pittance. Red's still around, a few feet away from me. Maybe Red'll see another appearance next year - FSM knows, there are loads of furs who've never seen one of, if not the, first red pandas in furrydom. >grin<
Indeed, I recall my revelation - I'd fallen into collecting comics, and I noticed I seemed to have something of an affinity for titles featuring anthropomorphic characters. One of them - probably Albedo - had a phone number for the Rowrbrazzle BBS. Calling that would be seriously expensive, so a friend on the Uni's student paper let me use their line. It was noisy as hell, so I had to spool out all the messages a few times to be sure of getting it all, but reading through them all made one thing so clear: there are others like me! ^_^
You knew the to-be-Skiltaire crew before the place existed? How nifty! How are they faring these days? It's been ages since I was in touch with that bunch.
Indeed, I do have one around, over on Flickr, taken at Duckon 7. (I was actually recording the show! Thankfully, visibility's just about good enough, even if there's not much stereoscopic vision)
True, the chest ought to be black, but I suppose that's just a toon thing. ^_^
Oh!! He's cute! Shawn Keller's work? Some liberties can be taken with colors and markings... I don't know if you keep abreast of the things people are building and wearing today, but I've seen some really crazy designs out there. I like how your builder sculpted the face especially, that petite muzzle is perfect and cute!
Actually Farallon Seal's first solo creation, but he'd worked closely with Shawn Keller a few times, so I suppose it's inevitable there'd be quite a few similarities in style. ^_^
I haven't kept quite as close an eye on fursuiting lately, but yes, I've seen some fabulously funky color combos and species meldings. ^_^ It's absolutely wonderful to see how fursuiting's blossomed - CF2's masquerade had about fifteen entrants. =:D I suppose it's no surprise, though - 'suiting is amazingly good fun. I mean, I'm really not much of one for children, normally, but as Red one time at the San Francisco Zoo, as part of a Critters by the Bay event, I actually really, truly wanted to make all of them happy. ^_^ Some, sadly, were only frightened, but overwhelmingly, Red was hugged and loved.
He did do such a great job with the muzzle, yes. It's all quite a bit simpler than some of the sophisticated designs now, but it's difficult not to feel very close to - not actually quite sure if Red's a boy or a girl, actually. I suppose it doesn't matter. ^_^
I'm sure I told you this before, but Red was the very first fursuit I met in furson at my very first con, CF6. And in my own hotel room, to boot! I'll see if I have some of my photos scanned. Offhand I don't think I do...

And a couple of Farallon Seal's other creations:
Timon, of course...
And Dog from "Footrot Flats"...
An extremely talented early builder, I'm sure you'll agree.
