Excerpt from my notes:
So, the Kirklands were an old Pureblood line that got steadily decimated by bad luck, misfortune and occasional bouts of idiocy in the 1800s. The last Kirkland never married (the delicate description was, "He kept peculiar company") and was killed with the beginning of WWI. However, right before he died, he fathered a child with a half-blood witch. That child became Elizabeth's grandmother. Currently, most of the immediate Kirkland family (who can take on the name) is actually mixed blood. Elizabeth's grandmother, Alice Kirkland, wed a half-blood and had two children, Elizabeth's mother and uncle. Elizabeth's own mother, Victoria Kirkland, married a half-blood as well. Alice Kirkland has since revitalized the tradition of witches AND wizards marrying INTO the Kirkland family, instead of sending Kirklands out of it. Oz and Kiwi aren't Kirklands, as they're related by marriage. Their grandmother was Alice Kirkland's sister-in-law (so they're Elizabeth's second cousins). By mischance, the Kirklands are the closest living magical relatives and after the brothers' parents die, they're sent to the British Isles. Luckily, even the tough-as-nails, winter lady Alice Kirkland has a soft spot for children as well as the memory of her late husband (even though she never met her own sister-in-law!).

I saw. xD She's such a creeper!

Ahh interesting! Such a mixture of houses all under the same roof too, makes for some interesting rivalry, I imagine XD

Creeper be creeping!

Pretty much. But Alice Kirkland dug up a few old binding rituals in the family library when she wed her husband, a Mr. Jacob Browning, a half-blood wizard who was a schoolmate of hers and wasn't from an especially powerful family or bloodline. Jacob had to formally renounce his surname and take on the Kirkland name, but this gave him access to magic specifically tied with the Kirkland bloodline. Their daughter, Victoria Kirkland, repeated the process with her own husband, Adrian Rothschild (a half-blood whose Muggle father abandoned his witch mother). Both mother and daughter were fairly lucky in finding amiable men who were willing to go through the renunciation. On the other hand, you could say that Victoria's marriage was far more based on love than on beneficial exchange because Adrian proposed to Victoria first and accepted the condition without thinking of the benefit it would grant him.

Both Oz and Kiwi go by their fathers' surnames though they are under the protection of the Kirkland Name as officially adopted by Victoria and Adrian Kirkland.

Oh that's intriguing, now I'm curious about these specific Kirkland magics. I enjoy that HP has so much room to expand on the magics stated in the books.

Also, heh, very much matriachal family XD

Does she look out for them round Hogwarts I wonder, very sneakily if so I imagine. Unlike Prussia who embarasses her dear Ravenclaw baby brother always.

It's mostly tied with artifacts on the Kirkland estate, some of the books and grimoires for instance. But there are a couple of spells and rituals that only Kirklands have access to, including invoking a household guardian (dating back to the time of the Romans, roughly).

Pretty matriarchal indeed because Alice Kirkland says so, tough bird that she is. She broke a century-old curse, claimed her biological father's name and estate, reestablished the family reputation, and told Deatheaters to shove off.

She looks out for them as much as she can in the 2-3 years she overlaps with them, including telling them about the staircase that switches every Thursday.
