Title: Five Times When the Paint Comes Off
Fandom: Avatar
Rating: K
Word Count: 230
Summary: Sokka/Suki, postwar

*

1. Births.

Sokka could see the logic in that - in not wanting sweat and makeup dripping into your eyes when you were busy trying to have a baby. Even if the thought of it still left him woozy. ("Yes, woozy, wait, what're you laughing at?")

2. Funerals.

It didn't need to be asked or explained, when you'd fought a war. All that mattered in the end was you, and the hope that those you'd left behind would find some of the peace you'd come into.

3. Weddings.

"It only that one time," Suki said, "but having the wrong people get married was embarrassing enough that we never wanted to see it happen again."

4. Retirements.

It meant lasting long enough to stow your gear and hang up your uniform, wash your brushes one last time and cap your paint-jars and tell the flamboyant stories of your own youthful exploits to your grandkids.

It sounded like a good deal, actually, the whole lasting long enough to get there thing.

5. Here. (At home, with you.)

It was a small concession, so she exaggerated panicked expressions, pretended to be helpless and let Sokka deal with the spiders. Which included picking them up and taking them outside.

Because that's what you did for people you loved.

(And it wasn't like he'd ever admit it to Suki, but Sokka always knew she was faking the arachnophobia and somehow that made it better.)
