Elphaba and Glinda sat in silence as the carriage bumped and rocked along the dirt road. One by one, the other passengers had either disappeared into one of the smaller cities, or hurried out of the carriage into a station. After a moment, the carriage jerked to a halt and an eerie silence washed over the women. Glinda took hold of Elphaba’s hand and clenched it as tight as she could, while Elphaba just sat, listening.
The door flung open and before the girls could scream or move at all, darkness had consumed them. When Glinda woke, she was alone in a dark room.
“Elphie?” She whispered. “Elphie?” Her voice had begun to sound frantic as she reached out to the darkness, in hopes of finding her green friend sitting in a corner. “Elphie? Elphaba? Elphaba!” She shouted before dropping her head to the floor. In the distance, she heard footsteps. “E-Elphie?” She asked with a shaky voice.
“Oh, shut up! You sniveling little twit!” A man spoke, sounding closer than Glinda had registered. In the distance, she heard rhythmic banging and the sound of screams and cackles. The man bent over and grabbed her by the arm, yanking her upwards.
“Lets go, you little brat.” He said in a harsh tone, leading her through a doorway to a dimly lit corridor, covered in metal bars and chains. As he pulled her down the hall, filthy creatures, resembling Quadlings and other species foreign to Glinda, rushed to the bars and screamed, banging their heads against the metal columns in an attempt to grab the man’s attention. He seemed to completely ignore them, whilst Glinda watched in horror as the creatures’ foreheads started to bleed, running down their faces and adding to the stains on their skin and clothes.
After what seemed like forever, he threw her into another dark room and closed the door. The rhythmic banging that Glinda had heard before was louder, as if coming from right next to her. She reached her hand out, her fingers brushing against cold, damp stone. She shifted her weight closer to the banging, straining to feel farther away without moving. This time, her fingers brushed against something that was moving. She covered her mouth with another hand to stop her scream. The banging stopped and a shaky hand met hers. Elphaba.
