I was reading an article on the NYTimes online today about anti-Semitism in Poland and I really just can't understand how a person could hate another person so much for something as trivial as their cultural/religious heritage. I also don't understand how a person could hate enough to commit such horrifying crimes against them. I don't think I could ever bring myself to seriously harm another person unless I was being physically attacked. I really just can't wrap my brain around such unthinking hatred and cruelty. This continued violence in a country where the most vile treatment of Jews occured during WWII is even more sickening. For the love of everything human, why? Is it easier for a person's conscience to participate in group killing than solitary murder? Does the presense of others provide a sort of solidarity in hatred, and validate their actions? It's cowardly and disgusting, and I have a hard time maintaining hope in humanity when I read things like this.
