As a reward for doing so well in her training and controlling her powers, Emma Frost had offered Angelica the chance to accompany her to a party at the Hellfire Club. For some reason, Randall hadn't been too keen on the idea, but he backed down when Emma had coolly asked him if he was questioning her judgment.
Two days later he was dead, at the hands of the Black Queen, Emma told her. She'd been devastated by his loss. Randall was more than her bodyguard; he was her friend. But it made her more determined than ever to go with Emma to the party, especially when Emma warned her the Black Queen might be there. She'd lost Randall, but she'd make sure nobody hurt Emma.
But as she was getting ready for the party, someone grabbed her. "Keep it quiet, kid. No noise!" a familiar but pained voice said.
"Randall?" she said, spinning around when he released her. "You're alive! What's going on? Why did Ms. Frost tell me you were dead?"
Battered and bloody, Randall crumpled to his knees. "She's been lying to you all along," he said. "She means to use you. Make you her private killer."
"What are you saying?" Angelica said, unable to believe what she was hearing.
"You've been set up," Randall said. "Frost has been playing you like a puppet on a string. She's the one who killed Butter Rum. Not you! Never you!"
"Randall, you're hurt, bleeding!" Angelica said. Maybe he'd been struck on the head. What else could explain what he was saying?
"You gotta run, kid," Randall said, his voice growing weaker. "Gotta hide." He slumped against the wall and closed his eyes.
"Please don't leave me, Randall!" Angelica pleaded. "I couldn't bear to lose you again! Randall, please don't go!" But he was gone, and she knew in her heart what he'd said was true. She'd blindly loved Emma, but if she was just using her, it explained so much.
She tore off her bloodstained dress and put on the uniform Emma had given her. She'd been such a fool, and now she was going to make Emma pay.
Filled with betrayal and rage, she headed over to the school to confront her teacher. All that training Emma had given to her to make her into a killer she now put to use against her, heating up the floor to burn her, melting the bullets of the guns her guards fired. "You've controlled my entire life until now!" she raged as she chased Emma down below the school. "Made all my decisions. I thought you cared but you were only using me!"
"That's not true!" Emma protested. "Think, Firestar! I'm your only friend. There's no one else you can turn to. Even your own father abandoned you!"
She fled into the Danger Room, turning all its weapons on Angelica, but she was used to all its tricks by now and not afraid to hold back any longer. She destroyed the room, unleashing her powers to explode and melt its weapons.
"Look at yourself, Firestar!" Emma called. "Can't you see what's happening to you? Your power is growing with each passing moment. You'll never been able to control it without my constant supervision, my training. You need me more than ever before. You can't survive without me."
She darted out the door and tried to lock Angelica inside, but Angelica just blasted the door. "You're wrong," she said. "I don't need you. I never did. I can make it on my own."
The blast at the door had stunned Emma, and she sagged against a wall. "What's the matter, Frost?" Angelica said, stalking toward her. "Afraid? You wanted me to learn how to kill. Well, you just may get your wish."
She held up her hand in front of Emma's face and heated the air. Emma screamed, clutching her hands to her face. "My face!" she said. "What have you done to my beautiful face?"
"Nothing," Angelica scoffed. "I merely heated up the air molecules enough to give you a feel for what my microwaves could do."
"Why are you doing this, child?" Emma said. "Why?"
"Because you hurt me!" Angelica said angrily. "You betrayed me. And I'm tired of all the lies. I just want to be left alone."
"Done!" Emma said. "Go now. I promise that you need never fear me again."
"Not so fast, lady," Angelica said, holding up her hand. "I'm going to seal this bargain in my own way. I don't want you to ever forget that I deliberately chose not to kill you. So I'm going to leave you with a little something to remember me by. Run, Frost, run, and don't look back. Because in just a few moments, your entire underground complex is going to be gone."
She waited a minute to let Emma run away and get out of the school. Then she focused her powers, sending out a blast of heat and energy to destroy all the computers and equipment and melt the walls. She fled herself, getting out just before the school exploded.
As she flew away from the school, she tried to collect her thoughts and decide what to do next. She could go home, but her father had proven he couldn't accept what she was. Professor Xavier had told her there was always a place for her at his school. But the choice of where to go seemed clear. Fandom. She could come back to Fandom.
