The devestation that cyclone Yasi brought to northern Queensland has been well broadcast on NZ news. Although the cyclone itself completely missed New Zealand, our weather has certainly been affected by it. Strong gale force winds and rain fluries hit the north island bringing surface flooding, and it has been almost constantly raining on the West Coast of the South Island, although that is not in itself unusual! Today, however, the East Coast of the South Island got hit with the full brunt of Yasi's power, and it has been utterly unbearable!
Christchurch today reached a whopping 36degrees! I am absolutely hopeless with the heat at the best of time, but today I have not known what to do with myself. At 7am it was already 28degrees. Around midday I decided to remove myself to the mall and the airconditioning for a while, and I wish I could have stayed there! There has been a constant rotation of drink bottles in the freezer and a boz of ice blocks consumed, and I am just about to consider sitting in an icy shower for a considerable amount of time!
In south Canterbury, Timaru reached a record high, and almost the highest recorded National Temperature to date - a disgustingly hot 41 degrees! And Dunedin reached a record high of 35degrees.
Thankfully a southerly is supposed to hit later this evening, with th temperature expected to suddenly drop by about 15degrees. Tomorrow is predicted to sit nicely in the mid-20s. Here's hoping, otherwise I may completely melt away!!!
