Why was blue the colour linked with him?

Blue used to be the national coulour of Ireland, and there is strong debate over whether it was associated with Saint Patrick or not. There was an order of Saint Patrick, which was comonly referred to as 'Saint Patrick's Blue' due to the several shades of blue associated with the order, which in turn became symbolic of Ireland. It's not known if Saint Patrick was in the order or not, but the colour was initially assigned to him until green became the national colour.
