Happy really Belated Birthday, ilychluna!
Here's the drabble you asked for a long, long time ago XD The song is 'Quiet Night' from Gundam SEED...

Pairing: Fuji/Sakuno
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: I don't own Prince of Tennis or any of its characters. Profit is not being made from the following piece of work. Nor do I own 'Quiet Night' or its translation which is used in the story.

The leaves crunched beneath her steps, reminding her fall had set in. The wind played with them in the dark night, having them dance in the forested path in front of her.

The wind rose up in a circular manner up her body and the coolness of it stung her bare shoulders. She didn’t have a shawl with her that night, thinking she wouldn’t need it. The woman hated when she was wrong.

Her feet stopped moving and Sakuno looked back at the party she was leaving behind for the moment. Her friends, hopefully, wouldn’t mind. They knew she didn’t like big events like the one happening at the moment.

It was an occasion meant for her twentieth birthday. Something she had wanted to celebrate with only people close to her, not those she had never seen in her life before.

Tomoka and An even went to the trouble of dressing her up like a doll. Her lips tugged into a smile as Sakuno remembered the effort they made to get along during the whole process.

Both women agreed on a white dress decorated with pink tropical-like flowers at the hem. It was an off-the-shoulder piece which came with a matching fabric flower to stick in her hair.

An decided to take charge of her hair and Sakuno had never seen such neatness before. The older woman made a complicated bun and stuck in the flower at the top. The style stayed for a couple of hours before beginning to unravel.

And that was how an excuse to fix her hair turned into a walk outside. She assumed it would be relatively safe outside since the moon was out, giving the world around her a nice glow. Thieves and the like usually struck when it was pitch black, right?

Yeah, they did. So it wouldn’t be a problem if she took a walk outside. With an accomplished grin in place, Sakuno resumed her walk.

Everything was quiet. Usually when she went for walks, someone would accompany her. And right now, she wanted him here with her.

He would appreciate the quiet too, she was sure. They would hold hands while he talked about something, usually to do with his brother. How he loved the younger one so. Strangely enough, that made her somewhat envious of Fuji Yuuta.

But that was silly. Yuuta had never asked for the attention, Syusuke would willingly give it to him.

She sighed. It was her birthday, a day to be happy! But she found it hard to do. She never told him she loved him before he left. The sandy haired male had left a year ago for his photography trip. It was a hobby he had picked up back in his childhood.

He was quite good at it; when he let her look through his work, Sakuno would become lost in them. Syusuke probably made the right choice as to keeping photography as a hobby than a career. Having too much of something isn’t the way to go.

Because she was lost in her own thoughts, a habit developed early in her life, the woman didn’t notice she was walking up a grassy hill. She stopped and looked around, to discover that it overlooked the building where her party was being held.

A tree with its leaves still intact stood behind her. She didn’t want to go back yet so she settled her self in front of the tree. With her legs out to the side and somewhat spread out, Sakuno closed her eyes.

Cerulean eyes flashed into her mind as well as a song. It was from a cd he had bought her long ago when they were shopping for his sister’s birthday present. When she was sure no one was around, she parted her lips and let the words flow out.

In this quiet night, I'm waiting for you
During that time, your smile has faded away

She could hear the tempo in her mind. She could feel his arm around her as they listened to the cd in his room. She could see his smiling face disappearing from her mind.

Now that a little time has passed,
Fond memories start to resurface.

Fuji Syusuke stopped walking and looked with open eyes at a tree to his right. His right hand was currently in his pants pocket, protecting a wrapped item. The man closed his eyes and smiled; he had found her.

At the place where stars fall,
I'm always wishing for your laughter.

With hushed footsteps, Fuji walked towards the tree and leaned against the side opposite where she was sitting. He could feel the rough bark against his back, which was protected by a white and blue striped shirt. The temptation to hug her right away was pushed down.

Even though we're apart now
We can meet again, right?

The man suppressed a chuckle. Of course they would meet again; the two never made the decision to break up or anything like that before he left. And Fuji was glad they didn’t; he missed talking to her in person.

From when has my smile faded this much
Since it was shattered by one mistake

He frowned. Her breath hitched at the last word. Did he do something wrong? Did she think she did something wrong? She never sounded depressed in her e-mails or occasional phone calls. The hand which was hidden away emerged with a blue box wrapped in silver ribbon.

Change only the precious things into light and
Go beyond the sky with fortitude.

Her tone was normal again. But that didn’t stop him from wondering. Yuuta answered his questions about the young woman positively so what was bothering her? He closed his eyes and listened to the rest of the song.

To the place where stars fall,
I want my thoughts to reach you.

‘It already is, Sakuno.’ He thought to himself. Her smiling face flickered across his mind. Europe had taught him many, many things and he was eager to share them with those around him. He wanted to see the smile he had not seen for a year.

I am always by your side
Since I will embrace that coldness.

The sincerity in words that did not belong to her was strong. A breeze blew by, brushing his hair away from his eyes. Fuji couldn’t believe the timing of the trip; they finished touring France, their last stop, when Osakada and An’s call reached him. The party sounded like a bit much since he was sure Sakuno didn’t like big events like those.

Even though we're apart now,
We will definitely be back together.
In this quiet night…

The song couldn’t be more correct. They would be reunited in the quiet night… With a hand on the bark, Fuji turned to look at the woman on the other side. She drew out the last sentence before opening her eyes and sighing.

Her knees were raised against her chest with her chin resting upon them. If she wasn’t leaning against the trunk, he would have placed her present around her neck. As it was now, the tree was too big for his arms to go around. That only left one option.

“Happy Birthday…Sakuno.” With one knee on the ground and an arm placed against the tree, Fuji opened his eyes. Her eyes widened before she looked at him.

Her startled expression became one of pure joy when she saw him. The next thing he knew, the male was trying to steady himself as Sakuno leaped into his arms. Her lips were placed against the side of his neck, and she held on tight. Fuji held her close as his chin rested on her shoulder. He missed holding her.

“Welcome home…Syusuke-kun.” She drew back and softly smiled at him. He closed his eyes and smiled as well.

“It’s good to be back, Sakuno.” She hugged him again but not as intense as the last time. He lightly pushed her away and handed her present over. Her russet eyes took in the box.

Cautiously, as if the item waiting inside was a bomb, Sakuno lifted the lid of the box. Her lips parted in mild surprise. Inside lay a glass pendant, shaped as an angel. Her fingers wrapped around the chain and pulled it out of the cushioned box.

“Syusuke-kun, it’s so pretty! Thank you.” She closed her eyes and smiled at him. He didn’t have to get her anything. Fuji took it away from her and proceeded to tie it around her neck.

The moon’s shine caught on to it and he could see the little details the craftsman painfully carved into it. The man was glad he had picked out this piece instead of the sun one.

“Eto…how was Europe?” She looked up at him. He grinned before tackling to her to the ground. She squealed in surprise before blushing at his closeness. Fuji chuckled before rolling off of her.

His muscled arm pulled Sakuno close to him and she hesitantly rested her hands on his shoulder. He didn’t have to look at her to know she was blushing. Some things never changed and he was glad.

As soon as the two were comfortable against the dry grass and looking at the moon, Fuji answered her question, deciding against his question for her.

“Europe is very…cultured. The architecture there is just different than what we would be used to. I’ll take you there one day.”

She turned her eyes to gaze at him. He hadn’t changed much; he still looked like an angel in the moonlight with his open eyes. But looks could be deceiving. Fuji had a side to him that was truly scary. But that rarely surfaced.

“I’m glad you’re back.” His eyes turned on her and he rotated on his side. His long fingers stroked her cheek, causing her to blush again.

As he inched nearer to her face, the man replied, “I am too…”

Sakuno was lost in his deep eyes. Her breathing quickened. As she closed her eyes again and let him take her away, she realized her birthday wish had been fulfilled.
