All women are beautiful and Brooke Smith is no exception. Her portrayal of Doctor Erica Hahn, Cardiothoracic surgeon based first at Mercy West then more recently at Seattle Grace Surgical Hospital was awe inspiring. The writer did a wonderful job up until Season Five Episode Seven of Grey’s Anatomy to portray a strong, independent woman working in a boy’s club world. She was second in her class only to Preston Burke; she is a world renowned and well respected surgeon.

Work is work and personal life plays no part in it for her, the two do not interact, however when Callie Torres walked into her life those lines began to blur. Callie can see the woman beneath and they become fast friends. Erica tells her straight up that she doesn’t make friends easily, hates crowds and keeps her private life exactly that, private.
They become joined at the hip, you see one, you usually can expect to see the other, this was noticed by everyone but only visiting Gynecological surgeon Addison Montgomery had the gumption to ask Callie if Erica and herself where an item or as she put it “Speaking the Vagina Monologues”, which Callie flatly and vehemently denied, but the seed was planted.

When Erica kissed her in the elevator to show up Mark Sloan, it awoke in the two of them what had gone unnoticed simmering under the surface of there close friendship.
Callie freaked out, Erica remained calm and let Callie come back to earth, and surprisingly it was Callie that took the first step into a relationship with Erica, kissing her outside the hospital after a hard days work with cement boy, being observed at a distance by Mark Sloan.

Mark Sloan, the bane of Erica’s existence at Seattle Grace, constantly getting between them. Mark was Callie’s other best friend, she ran to him always when she had issues with Erica, never considering that Erica was the person she should be talking her issues out with, not him. Communication failed and when Erica tried to take things further, Callie backed away from her, causing a rift in their already fragile relationship. Callie’s reaction after Erica’s wonderful revelation and then subsequent sleeping with Mark twice that same day was the final straw for Erica. She cut her losses, left Callie, the hospital and Seattle Grace to go and find herself again.

Being with Callie had drained her, and even with the epiphany on who she really was in the world, it wasn’t enough. Certainly she needed Callie to show her the true Erica Hahn but being treated that way was not right.
Erica lost herself but found another part of her buried under many years of sleeping with men. She realized the unfulfilled feeling afterward was that the gentle touch of a woman was missing.

Erica’s epiphany in that bed that morning spoke of metaphors, she opened her heart to Callie about her glasses and not being able to clearly see the green leaves of the evergreen trees, and compared Callie to her glasses, showing her clearly what had just been distorted pictures.
Erica revelation had been so great that we saw the real Erica for the first time, shattered walls falling like leaves around her she gave her heart to Callie on a platter and was subsequently rejected.
Erica Hahn the surgeon is career driven; she has no time for imbeciles or personal relationships. This drive is what partially suppressed her sexuality and who she really was. She more then likely grew up with parents who expected her to excel, and be normal, sleeping with woman was not normal and a disappointed eye would be bent upon her if a pretty girl distracted her from her studies or males in her classes.

Finding she was falling for Callie would have been a bit of a shock to start with, but the level headedness of Erica Hahn would have shown through. Callie trying to prove her sexuality with Mark Sloan was a case of protesting too much however a catholic background could have also played a part.
The thought of being with the woman with whom she had had her epiphany was comforting to her, but that was before she knew of not only the personal cover ups Callie was making but the professional ones as well, with Izzy Stevens and Denny DuQuett.
That relationship was poisonous, Erica walking away was the best thing she ever did thankfully before she lost any more of her rules and morals.

Walking away from Callie and Seattle Grace would have been one of the hardest things to do but easiest decisions to make. Erica Hahn doesn’t quit, but in this situation there was no other way out, so she did.
Callie compared her night with Erica to Gynecological Rotation, which my friends I can guarantee it most certainly is not! Callie went to Mark to get him to teach HER how to please Erica, as a woman she should already know and being scared together, exploring together should have been the basis of there relationship.

Callie’s gay panic and subsequent cheating on Erica is not the way the relationship should have gone, Erica was fully justified to walk away, her talents squandered and wasted at that hospital.
We can only imagine what happened after Erica walks away into the dark parking lot but we do know that she leaves, doesn’t report the hospital for breach of care and, for a little while at least, Callie morns for her. Erica never contacts Callie, but Callie tries, through text messages, emails and letters, never getting a reply.

Erica had finally found herself in the world, she owes Callie that much. We love Erica and we always will, for many of us she showed us the light at the end of the long dark rainbow. Brooks acting in The Leaves Scene touched many of us in a profound way and showed us that anything was possible in a world full of possibilities.

Erica Hahn will remain in our hearts for many years to come, especially in those that found acceptance for themselves.
Brooke, we love you for Erica, we will always be grateful…
