So I'm sitting at my computer this sunday morning.. I look up and out my window and see a squirrel walking along a little branch towards the end of it. Now due to gravity I could tell what branch this little guy was going to jump to, and it was a good 4 to 5 foot gap. This branch happens to be 40 feet above the ground, with no other branches below it. He was far enough out on the end that it bowed down, and you could see him lean back like he was getting ready to leap.. Just at the last second he hesitated, like he thought he wasn't going to make it, and lost grip on the branch he was standing on to the point of having to do a pull-up of sorts with his front legs to regain a hold of it. After regaining a four foot hold on the branch he turned around, and went down the tree to the ground, and went over to tree he was going to jump to, and climbed up it...
15 minutes later I see another sqirrel, maybe the same one go out on the same branch of the same tree.. all the way to the end... and turn around and go back down the tree. It makes sense really. There's a layer of snow on top of the branch at the receiving end of this jump, which to me is like trying to land a plane on an icy runway. You slip and you are done..
And in other news...
It rained shoes on the Dutch island of Terschelling.. Here is a picture of some people collecting them up...
