Negative Space
That means the main focus of the icon (the person/character in most cases) shouldn't take up more than 1/3 or at the most half of the icon space thus creating 'negative space'.
For an example see below the cut.

Rawr Caps doesn't exist anymore... they shut down due the FBI things... so you might wanna change that... but great challenge... I'm trying to enter =)
