Um, may I suggest that you change the wording of your poll, please? I attempted suicide when she disappeared! is making fun of a very serious situation, and might really upset a lot of people for no good reason. You could easily get your point across with something like 'I cried for a week' or 'I set up a shrine to her in my room'.
Gotta say, though, that, no, it's not "making fun of a very serious situation." It's overdramatizing missing a TV character, but it's not making light of suicide.
I actually had the same reaction to the "suicide" wording. Quite honestly, even if I'd loved the Cruz character, I wouldn't have wanted to tick that option because (and even though it was meant as an exaggeration to make a point) I don't like the idea of something related to a TV show being put in the same context as the notion of entertaining suicide.
And just for the record, I didn't like the Lauren character enough to miss it when Diana was brought back. I didn't loathe her or anything, but she didn't quite click with me. But I do understand that there are Cruz fans out there, so I think your claim is very valid.
I think it would be pretty unfair to 60+ participants to delete their responses. If the request had come in before anyone had responded, I'd have a different response, but it didn't.
I feel that they shouldn't have to. In any case, I've put the poll behind a cut, with a trigger warning, as per Mod instructions, so it's moot at this point anyway.
I appreciate that you did not have any intent to make light of a serious matter, but you used the phrase "I attempted suicide" to exaggerate a fan's distress over the absence of a character on a TV show. Don't be surprised that people are interpreting it that way.
Please take into consideration fellow community members who are sensitive to this subject and either 1) warn for potential triggers and place the poll behind an lj-cut, or 2) delete and repost the poll without that language. You can always copy&paste the old poll's results into the body of the entry if you do not wish to lose votes.
I take responsibility for not mentioning the use of trigger warnings among the community rules; the thought never occurred to me, since fanfiction is not posted here. I will be amending the rules accordingly, so please keep this in mind for any future posts/comments.
You obviously didn't intend it that way, but for those of us who have lost someone to suicide it is a very sensitive subject, and for it to be used in this context very much feels like making light of it.
