Neal tried playing the game as a honest man and it did him well in the beginning. He got a job, a car, a family, but then it fell apart. Burdened with debt and a few unfortunate events put him behind as his friends continued to prosper. He tried to pull his life back together, even considered cheating, but resisted the urge.
In the end, he lost. Elizabeth screamed with delight when Peter announced her as the winner. As they reset the board, Neal shuffled the cards and palmed a few. Next time he was going to play his way.
