Notes about LOST (6.12) - "Everybody Loves Hugo"

Apr 14, 2010 12:37

Good afternoon folks! Another great episode tonight as the alternate universe role is starting to take shape and we got more answers about island mythos. I also really enjoyed Hurley in this episode, taking charge and having confidence. But we have a bunch to talk about, so let's do this! Many thanks to getlostpodcastmedia for their pics and the great folks at ONTD_LOST for their gifs that I love using.

THINGS I NOTICED ABOUT LOST:

- Title Name- Just like the earlier s 6 episode, "What Kate Does" is the opposite of the episode, "What Kate Did," the title of this episode, "Everybody Loves Hugo" is a total opposite of the season 2 Hurley centric episode, "Everybody Hates Hugo." That episode showed how Hurley was scared the castaways would hate him if he had issues distributing the Dharma food while his flashback showed his best friend, Johnny, being alienated when he won the lotto. This episode showed the new and improved Hugo Reyes, a man who is loved by many for his charitable deeds.

Except of course....

- Still a nag- His mom still continues to badger him about not having a girlfriend or wife.

We've seen this since season 1 when Hurley's mom was giving him guff for eating too much and staying at home, thus leading to his single status.

- And both arms are there!- We got a nice cameo tonight from Dr. Pierre Chang as he was the one who introduced Hurley for his award. He mentioned how Hurley had donated money for a new paleontology wing of the Golden State Natural History Museum. This is the museum where Chang works along with Charlotte.

- Have a cluckily cluck cluck day, Hugo- I did like the return of the Mr. Cluck's chicken suit.

We saw the suit in season 2 when Hurley had his vision of Jin and the guy in the Clucks suit.

And the montage of Hurley's good deeds showed us several Mr. Cluck's locations and one that looked much like the location that got destroyed in the season 3 episode, "Tricia Tanaka is Dead."

- Mexican Restaurant- The name of the restaurant where Hugo was stood up by his date was named Spanish Johnny's.

I can't help but think that this is a nod to Hugo's best friend in the original timeline, whose name is/was Johnny.

Luckily, he did bump into somebody else though....

- LIBBY!!!- Libby's deceased gal friend returned tonight and I loved their conversation too.

She talked about how she saw him from "Across the Room" and when we found out Libby was crazy in the original timeline (s2 episode, "Dave"), she was seen staring at Hugo from across the room at Santa Rosa Mental Hospital. When she mentioned how she was scared he would think she was crazy, I wasn't sure what to think, but it was soon revealed that she was still at Santa Rosa. And who was her doctor? Dr. Brooks! We saw him in "Dave" as well as she was Hurley's doctor as well.

Libby talked to Hurley and said that she remembered him, but it seemed as though it was from another life, but she knew they had met each other before. This got me wondering: why do all of the dead LOSTies know about the original timeline in this new universe? We have: Faraday, Charlie, and now Libby who are speaking of the original timeline in this alternative universe. I know that when we saw Charlotte, she didn't speak a word of it, but maybe that's because she just didn't get a chance to see things or maybe she does see images of it too and we just don't hear about it/see it. BUT, Charlotte did die as a result of the time flashes whereas the dead folks we've seen in the AU died due to other circumstances. Maybe that plays a role? I dunno, but either way, you can't deny that those who have died seem to know something is up BEFORE those who are still living do.

But Libby wasn't the only dead person who made a cameo tonight....

- "They took my Boy!"- Michael returned tonight as a ghost talking to Hurley.

He told Hurley that he needed to avoid the dynamite and take another course of action or more people would die. I liked seeing Michael again as I liked his character and he did try to redeem himself for what he did. He did what he could to save the castaways from the freighter folk. I was a bit surprised he didn't mention Walt at least once though.

But Michael did drop a LOST bombshell as he told us what the whispers are!! He said that they were those who could not move on and are stuck on the island. And that makes sense as we've heard dead voices in the whispers before (and I heard a distinct "Richard" whisper last night) in the form of Boone, Frank Duckett (guy Sawyer shot in Australia). But finally, we have another answer to a LOST question! yay!)

And it seems as though another voice will be joining that group very shortly as....

- You've got some Ilana on you- A very shocking and explosive (ba dum ching!) moment as Ilana met her end thanks to the highly unstable dynamite from the Black Rock.

This also happened to our old buddy Leslie Arzt in season 1 when he blew up too. I did enjoy Ben's comment though about how she had told the group about how they were candidates, fulfilled what she needed to and then went boom as the island was done with her. And of course, we've heard the expression about the island being "done" with folks too.

- Ilana's stash- After she went boom, Hurley was seen going through her stuff. He picked up a book which (and somebody pointed this out to me) was "Notes from the Underground" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

I read this book during my undergrad and details a mans life as he tries to search for his own identity and meaning. He attempts to go out and meet folks and women, but it always ends terribly. Maybe this is a nod to Hurley and his attempt to be a good person in the original timeline, but he constantly met with problems and (sometimes) death.

He also grabbed a small bag of Ilana's and this look to me to be the bag where Ilana put a few handfuls of Jacob's ashes.

If he's going to talk to Esaulocke/Smokey, this will help protect him and the group as smokey can't cross the ashes.

- Leaving the island and the Kwon Candidate- Esaulocke told Kate and Sawyer that the only way that the group could leave the island was if they were all together, just as they were when Ajira 316 crashed on the island. But when he said that, He said that he was waiting for "Sun, Hugo, and Jack." Why not Jin? Does he not matter? Does this confirm that Sun is the candidate and not Jin? It looks like it.

He also told the two of them that they were waiting; for what? Did he know that Hurley would attempt to talk to the group instead of try to fight them? Was he just biding his time before the two groups got back together? Either way, the group seems to be getting back together as Hurley's group showed up at the end of the episode (get to that in a bit).

- Desmond's AU Travels- we got an idea of what Desmond could be doing in his alternate universe timeline: getting the LOSTies to remember. He talked to Hurley at Mr. Cluck's and told him to talk to Libby as he knew what would happen when he did.

The question is though: what happens next? Do they head BACK towards the island or something? What do they do if they start to remember? What can they do??!!?

- Kaboom!- Hurley took some serious step to ensure that his group wouldn't hurt themselves with the dynamite as he destroyed the Black Rock, much to Richard's irritation.

I do hope that Hurley knows what he's doing, but it does make sense that he would want to talk to Locke as Hurley isn't a violent person at all. This made me think back to Jacob's description in the Bible about how he was a "dweller of tents" which I took to mean that he was a conversationalist and wanted to talk to people and maybe talk things out. I am curious about Richard's comment about how if Esaulocke gets off the island, everything is "over." What did he mean by that?? What is this smoke creature?? Who is he? I STILL think Hurley will inherit the island from Jacob. Or maybe it'll be Jack because...

- Jack's new attitude- I found it great that Jack is FINALLY realizing he can't fix or change things. This has been a HUGE struggle for Jack throughout the series as he ALWAYS tried to fix things; he also took responsibility for Juliet's death, but since Juliet told miles that "it worked" I'm guessing she's alive and well in the AU timeline. After all, in the AU, Sun does need a ferility doctor and guess what Juliet's previous occupation was....

Also, I loved how Jack told Hurley that he wasn't used to sitting back and being told what to do. And his is VERY remiscent of Locke as Locke was always told what to do (to which he would yell back "don't tell me what I can and can't do!")

- Libby and Hurley in the hospital- I found this scene interesting as it gave us more detail about Libby's visions as she told Hurley that he had been at the hospital too, which Hurley obviously didn't remember. We know she is right though as we saw it in season 2. I did like the various images of the ocean/beach at the hospital though as Dr. Brooks has a picture of the beach in his office.

The chalkboard in the room where Libby and Hurley chatted has a drawing of the beach and ocean.

- Walk through the Jungle- I thought the conversation between Desmond and Essaulocke as they walked through the jungle was intersting, purely for the comment that Esaulocke made about how the "island has it in" for them. What did he mean by that? Is he saying this because he is angry and imprisoned or is there some truth to it? I mean, the island could very well be something else for all we know and we've been duped by Jacob this whole time. I'm not sure, but I found it interesting to say the least.

- Boy in the jungle- Esaulocke and Desmond ran into the mysterious boy in the jungle again tonight.

But this time he appeared to be much older than what he was when he and Sawyer saw him before.

I found it intersting that Desmond could see the boy (as Sawyer also could), but Richard was unable to see him a few episodes back. Why is that??? and who is this boy?! And why was he smiling? Is he a young, resurrected Jacob? Is he a young Esau? Is he Aaron? What is his purpose?

- He remembered- Kudos to Hurley for remembering to bring the blankets for his date with Libby in the AU.

If you think back to season 2, he forgot to bring the blankets and when Libby went to get blankets from the hatch, she was shot and killed by Michael. Hurley blamed himself and tearfully told her that was "sorry he forgot the blankets." I did enjoy how Libby said that their time at the beach felt like a "date we never had" as it didn't happen due to Michael being trigger happy. It was good to see the two get their relationship back and that Hurley was able to remember his island experiences.

A very content and glasses happy Desmond watches and pulls off.

- D'oh!- When Desmond and Esaulocke finally arrived at their location it turned out to be a well.

Esaulocke began to tell Desmond about how folks dug into the ground on the island to find answers as to why magnetism on the island is out of control. Esaulocke mentioned that Widmore wants power, alluding to he wants the island only for his own personal gain. He then tossed Desmond down the well, which I (and i'll guess most of you) saw coming.

From what I could tell, this is NOT the same well that houses the donkey wheel. The scenery looked all different as there were more trees and shrubbery by the donkey wheel well and this one was out in the middle of nowhere. Here is a pic of it:

I could be wrong though, but I don't think Esaulocke intended to toss island into the vicinity of something that could move the island and cause more problems.

- Jack's First Time...- The ending of the original timeline portion of the episode showed Jack and Locke meeting for the first time since Locke's death. Now, of course, this isn't Locke as know him, but it's as I affectionately call him, Esaulocke. Still, I can imagine how weird this must be for Jack and I LOOOOOOOOVED Esaulocke's smug grin/smirk at the end of the episode.

I'm curious to see how this little meeting goes though.

- That's a few points in the ole' license- Another shocking moment of the episode happened in the AU. This time around, Desmond is hanging outside of the school where John is teaching and he's questioned by Dr. Benjamin Linus. Kudos to Ben for looking out for his students though; good for you dude.

As Ben tried to find out what he was doing there and while Ben and Desmond played a game of "who can get their glasses lower on their nose", we spied Locke making his way to the parking lot. I was freakin' SHOCKED when Desmond ran him over with his car!!! What the hell?!?!!?

The main questions i have to ask: WHY?!!??!!?!?!?!?? Why would Des do this?!?! What does he know that we don't?!?! I mean, this is LOCKE, not Esaulocke that is evil in the original timeline. Maybe there is an evil side to this Locke we don't know about??! But how can that be? I mean, this Locke was accepting of his life, loved Helen and was moving forward and this poor driving scottish bastard just runs him over!???! WHY?!!?!?? What could this do?!?! And why did he have that weird half smile going on when he did it?!?

I really have NO clue on this one.

Wait, I do have an idea: what if you die in this new timeline? I mean, say this AU Locke dies, what does this mean for the original timeline version of himself? Could this kill Esaulocke and bring peace back to the island? Any ideas here folks?

- "Co-stan-za!"- I totally missed this great "Seinfeld" reference in the episode. When Hurley is talking to his mother, he told her that he was accepting an award from the Human Fund. The "Seinfeld" episode, "The Strike" has George avoiding having to buy christmas gifts for his co-workers, he fakes a donation to a fake group called "The Human Fund." Here is a great internet mockup of the organization.

Also, this is an actual group out of Cleveland, OH, that funds art programs for students, so this is probably what they were going for, but psh, when I see a chance to talk about "Seinfeld," I'll run with it!

THE NUMBERS (4 8 15 16 23 42)

- Desmond's order at Mr. Cluck's was 42.

- Hurley spotted a guy playing Connect 4 at Santa Rosa.

Hurley played this game with Leonard (who introduced him to the numbers) and this could also tie into the whole rules/games aspect of the island.

- Ilana had 4 pieces of dynamite in her bag.

- Dr. Brooks had 4 degrees/frames on the wall in his office.

- I spotted several letters/number in the main room at Santa Rosa. They were: X, U, Y, W, M, A, and 7. Let's see what we get here:

x: 24th letter in the alphabet. (maybe 2*4=8?)
U: 21st letter " "
Y: 25th letter " "
W: 23rd letter (got a number here!)
M: 13th letter (maybe 1+3=4?)
A: 1st letter

and then we have that 7. I tried to play with some of the numbers but didn't find much.

- The license plate on Desmond's murdermobile was: 2FAN321. If you add up the digits, you get 8. In regards to FAN, A is the 1st letter of the alphabet, F is the 6th letter and N is the 14th letter. If you take the digits and use them by each digit, you would do: 1+4+6+1 and that equals 12. However, 14-6 does equal 8, but what about that spare 1? I'm not sure, but it's all I could muster.

And by God I think that just about does it.

On another side of LOST goodness, the San Diego Comic Con exclusive bobblehead was revealed a bit ago and it's Claire!

There was another exclusive last year and it was a beaten up Ben Linus. I have this guy in my office and it's great.

I STILL haven't been able to find the bobbleheads of Richard, Daniel, and Pierre as they're sold out online right now and no stores carry them. If anybody spots them, let me know ASAP.

the same company is making some weird retro dolls of LOST, but they look.....................horrid? Is that the right word I'm looking for?

As always, feel free to post your theories/comments/ideas. I'll talk to you folks next week.

in closing, I'd like to dedicate this video to Mr. Desmond Hume (best version I could find while writing this up). Enjoy!
