REQUIEM FOR A DREAM

i. save me from myself, christina aguilera
he isn't quite sure when he started relying on the red-head, but he figures it was some time when they were separated before they had to go into the ark. he isn't quite sure when the thought of them being apart anymore became so painful. he isn't quite sure when he started to miss him.

so when he drags the unconscious body of his coworker - peer? acquaintance? friend? - out onto the street where he's waiting and he shouts his name and smiles and says so much more with his eyes, he can't bring himself to get upset.

because he needed that smile.

ii. chariot, gavin degraw
have you ever wondered, he asked one day when they had sneaked away from the headquarters, what will happen when the fight begins?

he had sighed then, and taken a bite of the sandwich he was in the middle of devouring. it'll be a war, of course.

no, no, he had said, shaking his head and draping an arm around his shoulders. i meant what will happen with us.

he had blinked, shrugged the arm off and started the walk back towards the dark building. nothing, idiot. we'll fight, and we might die, but we'll stop the earl from doing whatever it is he wants to do.

and he had followed, smiling, because he knew that meant that nothing between them would change.

even if the world ended.

iii. i'm going away, the greenhornes
he had known it couldn't last.

but that didn't make walking away any easier.

iv. us, regina spektor
one day i'll buy you a town, he said. no, i'll build it for you. and name it after you. and we'll be the only ones who will live there. and i won't have to worry about keeping my distance and you won't have to worry about people thinking you're weak. and we can sit around and do nothing and i can tell you i love you whenever i feel like it and no one will be around to hear.

he paused, sighing.

and when people come to visit we'll pretend our living here is an accident, not choice. that we don't care about each other like that. but when they're gone i can hold you in my arms and the only sounds will be the crickets and frogs and birds and no one will be watching, no tourists or spectators or visitors. just us and the night.

when he opened his eyes, no one was there. but then, no one was there in the first place.

v. i'm not down, the clash
i'm not giving up on you! he had shouted down the hall of headquarters. he had been ignored.

so really, it didn't explain why he had ended up being kissed against the wall. he had ignored him. he didn't feel anything.

so why couldn't he push him away?

vi. i write sins not tragedies, panic! at the disco
lying.

he knew he was lying, he had to be, right? he watched him introduce the pretty girl he had on his arm, even as allen shot a look in his direction, a look that said are you okay with this because he knew no matter how much he tried to hide it. he figured others could as well.

hey! meet my girlfriend! he said with a smile. she was pretty and everything he wasn't.

he didn't say anything to her. just looked him in the eyes, and walked off.

it was a lie.

...right?

vii. mr. brightside, the killers
because no matter how good he looked in a suit, and no matter how much he really found himself not minding the treatment...

there was no way he was wearing a dress.

viii. tequila, the pretenders
he knew it would never happen. he knew there was no way he could ever return his feelings.

so he drank and pretended to be detached.

and hoped.

ix. little green, joni mitchell
you look good in green, he had said, and given him a strip of cloth, the same green as his headband.

you think i look good in everything, he had replied with a huff.

but he had taken the fabric anyway.

x. gravity, vienna teng
no one believed him when he said he didn't care about his job, or the rules, because he was in love.

no one believed him when he tried to explain what it felt like, falling and falling and never reaching the bottom and never wanting to.

but maybe, he thought, maybe it was better that way.
