When my friends and I went to the LEGO Batman movie on Saturday (really good, you should see it), we discovered that Andy's Kitchen And Sushi Shop had closed. I hadn't been to Andy's for a few months, so this came as a big surprise to me, as he'd told me he'd call if he decided to close. I'm not currently regularly eating sushi anyways, and if it's not a movie night, I'll eat at Shige's in Cotati, within walking distance of my apartment.
Andy is the sushi chef who used to work at Kabuki and is one of the main reasons I like sushi so much. He's a great guy in general and a wonderful sushi chef. I've been getting sushi from him since 1995, a little after Kabuki opened, and I stayed with him when he went out on his own.
I called him on Sunday, and it ends up that he had a health issue and closed Andy's on short notice, and so that's why he didn't call me. He's feeling a lot better and is now working at one of the Santa Rosa post offices, and is enjoying a more stable work schedule and getting to sleep earlier and being able to get out and do things. The restaurant industry is hard on people.
Twenty-two years with the same sushi chef is a good run, right?
End of another era.
