RIP Laptop June 27 2016

A few months ago, Laptop, my cat, started eating poorly. I took her into the vet and after bloodwork it was discovered that she had kidney disease, and I started having to give her subcutaneous fluid injections every two days.

That didn't last very long because Laptop was having none of that, and I didn't want stray needles hurting either of us. (I'd already been poked with one of her sharps. Bled like a stuck pig.) And trying to hold her down was traumatic for both of us.

We spent several weeks working out how to get her drinking water and eating food regularly, but this past weekend she didn't eat anything and drank very little, so it was obviously time. I made an appointment with the vet and after going into work for a few hours, left there and came home and picked Laptop up and took her in.

After the muscle relaxant injection, her last conscious act was to feel uncomfortable at the vet and crawl her way up my chest onto my shoulders, where she has always felt most comfortable and safe. She'd not been able to do that for a few weeks.

Sadly, I had to lift her off when she needed to throw up, and so set her down on the towel. The vet shaved the inside of her back leg to find her vein and did the barbiturate injection, and Laptop passed away 15 minutes later.

I will have her ashes in a nice cedar box in three weeks, they say. I may bury her up at my parent's house in a while. Not sure.

There was a lot of crying at several points throughout this experience.

She was either 18 or 19 years old, I can't find her records right now, but she had a really good long life for a cat and I already miss her tremendously. Luckily, a good friend was able to come over and make dinner with me so I could hug and hold someone.

Goodbye, Laptop, you were always the best and smartest cat ever.
