O! had my Fate been join'd with thine,
Daniel spends hours in the Gallery.
As once this pledge appear'd a token,
He is not summoning his siblings.
These follies had not, then, been mine,
Not his Sibling. Oh, no, not his Sibling.
For, then, my peace had not been broken.
Why? Why, Desire, why?
For once my soul, like thine, was pure,
He stares at the sigil of his Sibling for hours on end, thinking of the woman that he can not have.
And all its rising fires could smother;
The woman that he wants, and will never be able to claim.
But, now, thy vows no more endure,
The woman who loves most strongly the him that he replaced.
Bestow'd by thee upon another.
His wife in a way, and more so not. A woman he loves, madly, passionately, beyond hope.
Perhaps, his peace I could destroy,
A woman that he can never touch, because she belongs to a different him.
And spoil the blisses that await him;
And even if Daniel, Dream of the Endless, knew how to take her from Morpheus, Dream of the Endless, would that make her happy? Could it?
Yet let my Rival smile in joy,
He knows the answer.
For thy dear sake, I cannot hate him.
And, because he knows the answer, he does nothing to disturb her. Neither shut her out nor open up to her. The Warder's bond is as quiet as he can make it.
Ah! since thy angel form is gone,
Daniel works, and when he is not working he is standing in the Gallery watching the sigil of Desire.
My heart no more can rest with any;
Not calling his Sibling, because he is not strong enough, not brave enough, to see if Desire can help him. And, may she forgive him, he could not bear to lose what of her he can clutch and hold.
And fiends might pity what I feel---
Even if it is only the thrice-seen shape of her face, or the serene strength of her words. Even if it is nothing but the memory of her, he can't bear to lose the love he feels.
To know that thou art lost for ever.
And she is Morpheus' bride.
