A Wiki-wiki Wiki-woo

Last night in class, our assignment was to do some work in Wikipedia. Whether it be to start a new entry on something we knew about that wasn't represented or add to/edit an existing entry about which we had some knowledge. I'd prepared as well as I could ahead of time, going over the tutorial, and browsing around trying to figure out how the fuck Wikipedia works. I'd been worried I hadn't done enough (Skittles), but as usual it turned out I'd done way more than most of the class.

Slackers.

I'd also peeked into what sort of topics and entries I might want to add to. I figured anime and manga wasn't well-represented (or well-written) and I was right. But because I am the freak I am, I decided to start with the Kingdom Hearts entries, specifically the one on Riku, which I felt needed serious help.

When I signed on in class, the entry had been changed since the night before, beginning with the sentence "Ever since Kairi came to destiny islands, Riku and Sora had a rivalry for her love."

WHAT the fuck. First of all, this is an entry on Riku, not KH shipping. Second of all, that statement is not fact but THEORY. Just as much as Riku/Sora is theory. So fuck you very much.

Natch, I took it out. And then proceeded to completely overhaul the KH1 part of the entry. It barely told Riku's story at all, got facts wrong, and had Engrish all over the place.

As I worked, I worried that the girl who seems to have 'claimed' the entry as her territory would pop up and freak out. But you know what? Screw her. I gleefully informed my professor that I was going to rip up this girl's article and make her cry (and he gleefully approved - I love this guy. XD), but I really should've given her more credit.

After my second edit-save, she did in fact pop up. But the only changes she made were to fix a link I'd created that went to the wrong place and then change Maleficent's reference (not written by me) as "a sorceress" to "a dark fairy." Already I liked this chick. Don't even get me started on the whole Maleficent=witch deal. I call it bad translation on Disney's part and/or general misunderstanding of a classic fairy tale on the part of the Japanese.

So, yeah. After it was "pens down" time in class, the chick popped on again and fixed my links (which went all over the place--hey, I was in a hurry and couldn't check them) and fiddled with one sentence that was no big deal (though I don't understand why she wanted to leave Xehanort out of my Destiny Islands synopsis).

Anyway, it was fun in an anal-retentive Virgo way where fun pretty much just feels like work. I can't imagine playing around on Wikipedia often, because I just don't have the spare time to work for free when I could be cleaning my house/doing homework/fucking around like a moron. But now that I know how easy it is to edit, I'll probably fix little mistakes I find in Wikipedia articles in the future. Because I am the ninja copy-editor of DOOM.

For those of you who do love Riku and/or Kingdom Hearts and know more than a rat's ass about them, I'd recommend dropping by the pages and adding your two cents (also, don't be h8in' - I didn't COMPLETELY rewrite the first section, so don't blame me for the Engrish at the end. It's actually easy to tell where my bit leaves off and the original starts). The Chain of Memories bits are especially sparse and bad, and the KH2 stuff is growing, but was based on nothing but uninformed rumour for so long.

...And wow, I just went back and saw someone put totally INCORRECT theory into the beginning of the KH2 bit about why Riku wears the blindfold. Way to promote your own asinine fanfiction theories in what's supposed to be a neutral p.o.v. encyclopedic entry, dillhole. 'He had to lie to himself and so he hid the lie?' What the fuck, Jethro? Clearly written by someone who knows jack about Reverse/Rebirth in CoM, too. *gives them the fig*

I haven't been cross-posting my class blog posts, because I just haven't cared/had the time. But here's the one I wrote today:

Talk on the train this morning reminded me that I forgot to vote before I left for work. Guh. I always forget. Damnit. Hopefully I can haul ass home after work, grab my card, and make it to the polling place in time.
Stupid. I don't know how many elections I've missed now. I am so not a morning person.

This morning seemed to be the morning of funny little men. As I was walking up to the platform, this tiny Asian man almost mowed me down. And when I say tiny, I mean tiny. He was maybe 5 foot or something. I was about to get pissed when I saw how tiny he was. Then I just smiled.

I was running early today because it's my goal this week to arrive at work before my boss... Anyway, so I'm running early and the train took FOREVER to come. By the time it finally arrived, the platform was two people deep (it's usually just one line of people if the train takes a while).

Anyhow, there's this South Asian guy standing in front of me, and I was so completely distracted by his pants. (No, it's not what you're thinking.) He had the most carefully pressed creases…in the BACK. Now correct me if I'm wrong, but slacks are supposed to have creases in the FRONT of the legs, right? What's the point of putting creases in the BACK? It made him look decidedly odd. And you just knew he'd ironed them himself to look that way. XD

On the train, he proceeded to speak on his cell phone in a language I could not place. Didn't sound like Hindi to me. Last week there was a woman speaking some West Indian language. I swear it was. Maybe it was an African language. But her intonation totally made me think West Indian.

At least when people speak on their cell phones in foreign languages, it's less intrusive and annoying to those around them. The Indian/Pakistani guy was speaking really softly, too. I was impressed. Let's hear it for Asian manners and propriety.
