[Responses to (and spoilers for) 8x03]I've seen some criticisms of Sam's behaviour (or the writing for him) so far this season, so I just thought I'd weigh in there with my (optimistic) interpretation, and hope that my faith pays off

Good. The cake is important. It must hastily be explained away! Either that or they have to give me some reason to like Amelia. Or at least to believe Sam likes her.
And now to go off topic of Dean and Sam, I just thought I'd share my disbelief in http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0172557/ saying we have to wait until EPISODE FREAKING SEVEN before we get more Castiel.
When I said I'm okay with waiting to find out what happened to the poor angel, I didn't think it would be four more weeks till we see him again. WHYYYYYY????? *bangs head against wall*
Yes, I've seen quite a few people complaining about this being just a filler episode, but I was rather interested to see how the boys interacted in the context of that basic known scenario. And it wasn't disappointing - I really did love their banter about the case, and you could see Dean revelling in it too - the finishing each other's sentences, the 'damn I gave it away!' style moments, the way they're both easy and familiar with each other and the rhythm of a typical case enough that it feels like a joke we're all in on, and that both of them are having a lot of fun getting back into

I don't know... this episode just rubbed me wrong. Somehow the lighting and framing combined with a fairly mediocre story (I don't know why I expect more out of stories about gods, because Supernatural *never* does the research and always does them poorly) made me hope that this will be the worst of the season.
But Dean and Sam did seem to have forgot their own histories, since neither of them referenced either of their previous attempts at a 'normal life'. It would have been nice if Dean had at least brought up Lisa and Ben and how it didn't work, or Sam had brought up Jess and Stanford and his attempts there.
I was not impressed with this story, and given that last week's episode, and given that I really liked last week's, that's sad. We need more guest characters like Linda Tran, because she was awesome.
I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one here who's NOT vilifying Sam and Dean for their behavior this season. I find them perfectly in character, especially considering the year they spent apart. In fact, I'm loving the writing regarding their character development so far, especially since we're actually getting some! I mean, as opposed to vaguely interesting monster hunting episodes with barely 3 minutes of heart to heart at the end, just to keep up hooked. The sheer amount of talking going on between them in this season has me creaming my metaphorical panties here
