Because Sam's the one whose response to being trapped in a glass revolving door in frozen time by a not entirely benevolent creature of huge and unpredictable power is, "Brat." And, "Two can play at that game." And a joyful rising to the challenge.
Part of the reason I love Gabriel/Sam is that Sam needs his nonphysical skills challenged too: not just intelligence but imagination, balance, and empathy. He needs someone who will lead him a bit of a dance, and who will take turns chasing him. He needs to be kept busy, mind and body, to really thrive.
Dean loves a challenge too, of course. I can't help noticing that Gabriel chooses the kind of challenge Dean will be most comfortable with, something funny and hot and almost entirely free of weird. One of this Gabriel's wonderful displays of tact in courting the rest of his family.
Dear Spouse agrees that this section is marvelous.
Well. Sam's always been surrounded by powerful people/things. So in a way the power here becomes irrelevant - a turn-on, in the way Gabriel finds Sam's size and physical strength a turn-on, but not dangerousr. Because by this stage it's not "how strong are you" that'sthe most important factor so much as do I trust you, and what do I think you're going to do with that trust. Besides, what's flirting without a tang of challenge...
And, yes. Gabriel and Sam do that for each other brilliantly, and it makes them both sparkle. And they deserve that, by now. :)
Hah. I like your choice of the word "courting". Because of course he is, because he wants to be included, not just as Sam's partner but on his own terms with each of them. And of course his courting involves flirting, because he is iirreverent and inappropriate and thinksthey're all hot. But, of course, it will stop just short of acknowledging that it is COURTINGcas and dean until Sam gives him that final little shove...
I just have to say again how happy reading this story (and its kin) makes me. These guys! These trapeze artists and their daredevil acts of trust offered and returned.
SUGAR NIPPLES. SUGAR NIPPLES. I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO LOOK AT SAM THE SAME WAY AGAIN. AND GABRIEL AND DEAN GET TO MAKE OUT. IF GABRIEL MAKES OUT WITH BOBBY TOO I AM SO DONE WITH YOU.
I AM AFRAID HE DOES NOT MAKE OUT WITH BOBBY but he may have just made out with Dean in the Christmas time stamp I am writing right now because mistletoe is an excuse for everything.
