Because Lucifer didn’t lie. He just set reality aside for his own version. When a not-entirely-antagonistic relationship between Sam and Lucifer works, I think, it's because of Sam's remarkable ability to think himself into the mind of just about anything. Even something that by definition is impossible for humans to understand. I love the Sam you've built here, and his unflinching tenderness toward the vagaries of created beings.
He does try very hard to think things through, when he's not busy being furious. And he's always so logical about it, but so often ends up making very bad decisions, poor lad. And of course Dean, who's far less inclined to empathise with things that fall into the 'monster' category, only sees the results of Sam's bad decisions, so. Hoorah strife potential.
Of course, Sam's penchant for secrecy doesn't help. Silly boys. :)
'Tenderness' is an interesting choice of word, but... yes, I don't think I'd argue with it. He wants so hard to understand, and he wants (and fears) to look at Lucifer and see himself, so he wants even harder to look at him and see something redeemable, something not completely black and horrific.
Ahem, anyhoo, I just had to say, I love your Lucifer, too. I'm a huge fan of misunderstood-and-isn't-REALLY-evil...!Lucifer, and you did that so perfectly here with Sam's epiphany that you're now the first (and most likely only) to make me kind of okay with any kind of Sam/Lucifer. Nobody has ever even come close, so bravo to you.
That was what I loved about season 5's Lucifer - and why I really really didn't want the brutish, unsubtle, malicious Lucifer of early season 7 to be anything but Sam's twisted memories. Which of course I addressed in another fic. :) But yes, season 5 Lucifer is such an aching mess of determination and stubbornness and curiosity that I couldn't just leave him as a pure villain. He and Sam are far too interesting together for that.
