This community and the fans have been kind of dead for a while, no? ;) So we thought a good idea to revitalize our love for Whistle! would be to have a series of discussion posts centered around each volume. The way it will work is something like this: every two (maybe three?) weeks we'll go through another volume and discuss it. This gives you

I love that Kou works as a male escort. So entertaining! Poor Sho, having to look after his big mess of a brother. Their relationship is adorable. :)
I love the part right at the beginning when Tatsuya first sees Sho (gloriously missing the ball). I loved Tatsubon right then and there, all because of his arrogant face! And I love how he was the only one who had any inkling of an idea that Sho was not a great big soccer hero right away. His annoyance melted my heart, haha.
I must admit, though, that one thing that really bothers me is the fact that the MNM substitutes did not seem to train with the rest of the team. He talks about how all he ever did was run and juggle the ball. Seems kind of pointless to have a substitute who doesn't actually train at the game? Not really going to be able to substitute him into a game if he can't play. >.<
*sigh* And then we have Tatsubon outing him as not being a starter! To be honest, I don't really like Sho all that much (he annoys the crap out of me) so I quite enjoy this scene of angst for him, hehe. And to this day I am still curious about who Tatsuya knows at MNM! I've always assumed it must be someone in his year who he met at the tryouts. But still, I need to know these things! I hate it when they're not explained.
I also must admit to the fact of being annoyed with reality being glossed over again. I can't see any teacher (especially the Japanese, who place such importance on education) allowing Sho to skip class in order to train. Ugh, I know it's fiction and all, but it's supposed to be based in reality. I'll stfu on that point though, since I'm sure I'm probably the only one bothered by it. ;)
I love that Tatsuya completely dominates training even though he's not the captain yet, telling everyone off! He may be a little arrogant, but he's dedicated, haha. I also love that he goes running by himself after school! Dedication indeed.
And Sho standing there digging his nails into his palms kinda creeps me out, I'm not gonna lie. That's not dedication - that's insane obsession! Poor kid needs psychological help. ;)
I love Tats' indifference to Sho being all excited about playing with him. I love characters like him, their bratty arrogance makes me smile. ;) And of course I love that he came to the rescue when the other thief was getting away. Super Tats! :)
And then whacking Honma in the back of the head with the ball when he was trash talking Sho? Genius! I love my arrogant little snob. <3 He's so matter of fact and snotty (with good reason, mind you) and gah, I could sit here all day gushing about how much I love him. But I'll spare you. ;)
I just have to mention that I quite love how angry and kind of crazy Hanazawa looks, like he's going to rip someone's head off! Then again, he really does look about ten years older than he should be, but wtfever. He still entertains me. ;)
But this is when I start to see how annoying Sho's character will be. Seriously, kid has a psychotic obsession. The whole shaking thing when he's about to play the 2 on 2 game the first time? A little overly dramatic for my liking. :P
I also have to say that I enjoy the chapter title pages. Particularly chapter 5 - it totally gives off glimpses of the future. All the team is together, except for Tatsuya, who has such a hard time connecting with everyone despite trying to be a leader. Sho in the middle, trying to bridge the gap. Lovely foreshadowing. And I did love the bits of Tatsuya training them all.
I love how everyone teases Takai for having a big head. Poor guy! I kind of just want to squish his cheeks. :D I adore how the seniors are talking shit about Tatsuya. Oh, such teenage jealousy! It's adorable to me. :D And Tatsuya's fangirls, haha! So cute. <3

Shige listening in on Tatsuya's talk with Honma via a can to the door is still one of my all time favourite scenes. It's just so ridiculous. <3 BUT my single favourite panel ever is definitely Shige playing house in the sandbox with that little girl. How does he know her?! Did he just show up and start playing with her in order to spy on Sho and Noro? Does he actually know the kid?! I need to know these things!! It's just so adorable, thinking of him letting some little girl play house with him, haha.
I LOVE that comic at the end of Tats plucking his eyebrows. It's brilliant.
Okay so I didn't actually answer any of those questions typically, but I prefer doing a complete read-through like this with comments. Easier to keep track of what happened. :D

I actually dislike Tatsuya's complete and overbearing arrogance. He's such a jerk XD Though he is pretty awesome, and I do admire his dedication and think his fail!people-skills are amusing.
Sho used to annoy me a lot too. But I've really started to appreciate him as a person, and admire his dedication and purity, so to speak. :) A little obsessive? Heck yeah he is, but that's what separates him from the rest-- he loves soccer more than anything else in life, while the others (quite realistically, of course) have other things in life that take higher priority.
I thought it was interesting how differently we thought about them ;)
Kou being a male escort, btw? YES, TOTAL WIN XD
....I sort of think that should be Shige's job too. OMG. Kou should be Shige's mentor and teach him the ways

I think I love arrogant jerks, because my favourite muse of all time (different show) is an arrogant jerk, and he's been in my head for so long that I've developed a soft spot for characters like that. I especially love them because it's so easy to dream up angsty back stories for them. ;)
I wouldn't mind Sho if he was a little calmer and not so pent up, if that makes sense. He's overly dramatic in his responses to things at this early stage of the manga, and it gets on my nerves. Hence why I love super calm Tatsuya and indifferent Shige. ;)
And I am totally in support of Kou teaching Shige the ropes of the escort business. It would be a crime for the boy to do anything different with his life. I mean, he could follow in his mother's footsteps! ;)

Haha, and wait, was it with you that we were talking about Shige being like Schuldig? Is that your muse? ;)

Yeah that was me! Schu (as much of a jerk as he is;) is not the muse I'm thinking of, though. It's a character by the name of Ace from a show called My Little Pony Tales (yes, a pony!). He's an arrogant jerk who all the girls are in love with and who, fittingly enough, wants to be a pro soccer player (yes the ponies play sports, haha). He's made me love arrogant jerks. ;)
