Love. Iconic love. Hope.

A thread on Tumblr inspired by our Klaine going against the Doctor & Rose for EW's Greatest TV Couple of All Time. Sometimes, my Tumblr needs to be on my LJ:

Kurt and Blaine: The Greatest Couple in TV History

1. It isn’t because their love is so different from other great love stories.

In fact, in many ways, their love is very much a classic and gorgeous love story - they were friends first with shared experiences and interests (Favourite Vogue cover, tickets to see Greg Evigan in Rent, football - well, Blaine likes football, Kurt likes scarves). There is an unrequited crush, idealization breaking, and Blaine waking up to the love right in front of him. Stunningly romantic first kiss, a honeymoon stage, attending proms, doing crazy unrealistic romantic things like switching schools to be together - classic fairytale these two. And a solid relationship followed by realistic life challenges - separation for college (despite noteworthy support for the move), feeling rejected, cheating and deep regret about it, and a break up. Followed by the pull back to each other because that’s how the story goes. Some things are just meant to be.

2. It isn’t because they are a gay couple.

There have been lots of gay couples on TV before Kurt and Blaine. Even gay highschool couples. Marco on Degrassi shared a little kiss with his boyfriend in 2003. And there were other couples that had fully developed relationships of challenges and romance like Kevin and Scotty on Brothers and Sisters.

3. It’s gestalt - The sum is greater than its parts.

The combination of all these things makes them unique in TV history. Their gay identities definitely form part of their stories individually and their love story - they feel a common bond instantly because of their shared experiences, they both navigate being out and proud and what that means to each of them, becoming role model characters.

But their actual romance - with such an unusual chemistry and sweetness - feels like just a fairytale romance - and because of that, it has been a total normalization of gay romantic images on a widely watched network show geared at youth. The use of music - Teenage Dream, Come What May - just heightens the connection - and I do believe it is the first time these types of iconic romantic high moments have been shown for a gay teen couple on network television. And that normalization becomes a representation of hope and what the world really can be.

Kurt and Blaine’s chemistry, complexity, sweetness as they play out a classic romance is magical. We’ve all said ‘there’s just something about those two…’

And whatever it is, it has changed the world.

All of this is true, and beautifully said.

I would add that Kurt and Blaine are also the first romantic teen gay couple to cross over into the mainstream. In the LGBTQ community, we have our own iconic couples, but you’d be hard-pressed to find an “average” straight person (as in, someone who does not regularly socialize with gay folks) who is familiar with them.

This crossover into mainstream pop culture-not just as a gay couple, but as a phenomenon-is a key factor in why they should absolutely be a contender for the greatest couple in TV history.

P.S. All of this is why I chose the blog name, iconicklaine.

Transcendant. That’s the word for them.

My comment:

“And that normalization becomes a representation of hope and what the world really can be.”

Their love is so much of what our dreams of love are made of, told in a story while compelling and beautiful, isn’t terribly unique, but wrapped in a package that seemed so unreachable to many of us. “Transcendent” (I love that word) is a really fascinating word for them. It surpasses so many limitations the world has set for what romance looks like, and it still challenges our beliefs and barriers of our own dreams for what is possible in our own lives.
