Last Thursday I went to a AIGA Lecture featuring Terry Slaughter. (owner and founder of the slaughter group) I found the lecture to be inspiring and encouraging.
He spoke a lot about his design and life and how the two are inseparable. design isn't a job but life.. and design can change the world. it can be powerful when combined with creativity and purpose.
Heres what i think is the dilemma (in my life anyway):
Any good designer should be striving for the following:
1. quality design
2. purposeful design
3. effective design
here is what a good majority of clients want:
1. fast design
2. cheap design
3. "good enough"
we aren't pushing the limits or going over the boundaries... the box is here and we aren't stepping out of it.
The problem comes when the time it takes to put in isn't allowed... when you are constrained by a budget and an hourly quota.. when you have to jump at the first decent idea but not go beyond to the brilliant one. There are people out there and clients out there that appreciate the value of design and are willing to pay for it. How do we wade through the mess of people just wanting something fast and cheap and not willing to see the potential? how do we convince those of the value.. change their perspective?
design can be used for the good of mankind.. design can help others.. design can encourage environmental/social awareness.. its all about choices. its all about purpose.
Terry believes in not compromising. not compromising his purpose and his focus - his commitment to good design. He has had a hard time getting through with this purpose and this focus but he says that what got him through is a strong base of a portfolio and a faith in God.
Q and A time:
Can and should we as designers develop our own purpose?
definaltey!
Can and should we stick to this purpose uncompromisingly?
we should but we will have to fall off the cliff for a while before we can fly.
Can good design really change the world?
Terry thinks so. and I freakin believe him.
Where do we go from here?
We need to take these things to heart. We need to believe in good design. we need to not compromise. this might mean go the extra mile.. put in the extra hour. take the time to talk about why good design is important and why things shouldn't always be cheap and fast. why good design is a good investment. and also start to reject projects that don't necessarily follow the principals that you have instilled in yourself. We need to strive for excellence in all that we do.
designers and artists out there: what do you think?
