Hello, wall…

Life has been a bit different here over the last few weeks, having Lei around. It hasn’t panned out quite the way I envisioned it. My intent was to pull her out of the environment she has been encapsulated in for the last year or so, where I feel she is learning some unhealthy habit, being shaped in unhealthy ways, and forming, maintaining, and enabling unhealthy relationships - and inject her into an atmosphere where she was around people who related to each other in more healthy ways. Also, it would afford her the opportunity to see what life is like outside of Charleston for the first time in her adult life, and maybe show her that it’s a beautiful world out there that beckons and that it’s hers for the taking.

Well, it’s been a partial success. Before Lei got here, I was hanging out with various people and doing various things. But since she got here, I pretty much haven’t hung out with anyone, so she hasn’t gotten a dose of any social aspects of SoCal just yet. But as far as the “getting out and doing things” part - we have probably done as many different things here in the last three weeks than we did in three years at Beaufort. Between snorkeling and seal-watching at La Jolla cove, to walking different nature trails, jogging along the coast, teaching her to shoot pool and play the guitar, enjoying the jaccuzi at night, flying a plane… we haven’t even exhausted the list of things we plan on doing, let alone explored all the opportunities around here. We might go to Disneyland next weekend (or whenever Stephanie isn’t tied up) and probably to the Wild Animal park the weekend after that.

The money crunch is being negotiated thanks to a credit card that I had paid off last year. That gives me a lifeline until I get my raise in February and find tenants for the house hopefully sooner. Lei is gainfully employed in her chosen field, and she really likes her client. It’s an elderly Polish lady named Mary Hodges, and she is a trip. I’ve already hung out with them twice. Poor woman suffers from dementia, and has trouble remembering anything short-term - much like my recently departed grandmother. But I guess it’s not always a bad thing - she’s always thrilled to meet me. First time I went over there, she poured me a 4oz shot of Jagermeister. This was at 12 noon, and I had just gotten through running the coastal bridge with Desi.

The other night Lei and I went and say “Quarantine”. The movie had us more stressed out than a cat in a barn on fire. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys getting lost in a good scary movie.

I’ve got lots of people wanting to come visit me out here. Torey just added her name to the list. That makes her, Griselle, Carla, Erica, Eric, and Angelina that have suggested that they will visit me here. We’ll see if any of them actually pan out. It’s going to be tough because I’ll be deploying to an exercise in December, so that will cut out some of the potential dates available. We’re trying to talk Lester into coming out here, but we haven’t heard back from him yet.
