katie.m hello world, i am twenty years old today. i feel old. this is because all of the kent island students are suddenly the same age as i am, and i am right now paying rent, and cooking my own food, and i am experiencing new complex emotions involving my new complex emotional capacity to be heartbroken, and everyone is growing up and drinking alcohol legally and moving away and getting married and goddamn this shit is all changing. whoa, let's just stop for a second.
i started work on monday; it's pretty cool. i'm going to prepare lead/tin alloys of differing percentages, coat half of them with a salt layer, and then expose them to a humid glass chamber with acetic acid vapor to study the effects of the acid presence on the corrosion rate of the lead, or rather: how the tin percentage and salt presence stops the acid action on the lead samples. w00t. we went to case western yesterday to use their crystallography lab. we visited a beautiful ansel adams exhibit/retrospective of sorts at the art institute of cleveland, and had delicious lunch at presti's in little italy.
oberlin in the summer is thus far beautiful and has yet to get deathly humid (though i know it's coming). the cold rain reminded me of the northeast these past few days, the smell of green and mist coming through my corner windows at night - but now, for my birthday of course, it's in the 70s and sunny today. it's lovely. my room is painted a very nice shade of blue, complimented by my dark wood floors. my orange bedspread works wonderfully with the indigenous decor, what with all that complimentary color jazz and such. (et tout le bataclan, oui oui) we're going to dinner in an hour or so. it hasn't quite felt like my birthday today, but what do you expect at age 20? certainly not much.
that was my attempt at cool nonchalance. really i'm enjoying myself here. we make nice dinners and then linger, eat vanilla fudge twirl ice cream. it's cozy. i get tired early.
kent island: looked like tropical paradise this photo was taken. turns out it's just northern, bay-of-fundy paradise, but nonetheless.
science?
