Still Human 06: Thomas meets a (sexy) beast

Yesterday, George and Thomas played games till George felt sick to his stomach.

It's Saturday morning, and Thomas makes a pancake breakfast.  At the table, he raises the topic of adopting a pet, again.  George ignores him, though.  He can hardly wait to get back to his job as a Sea Lice Research Assistant, so that's all he wants to talk about.  And what do you know?  As George is talking, his carpool pulls up.  Perfect timing!

Thomas also has work, today.  It's his first day washing dishes at a local restaurant.

Thomas isn't as excited about his job as George is, though.  In fact, he looks a bit worried.

Just look at this guy.  He's so eager to go to work, he's running to the carpool.  As he catches the driver's eye, he snaps a jaunty Cousteau Society salute.  Thomas watches him from the dining room window and thinks, “If we weren't best friends, I'd have to pretend I didn't know him.”

In an attempt at landscaping this enormous lot, I've added a patio area and re-shaped the garden.  It's the last day of fall, though, so I won't add any plants before the winter.

Thomas sprays the trees one last time before the season changes.

Good thing, too.  He seems to be getting a bit high off the fumes.

While Thomas is in the backyard, the repairman arrives to fix the dishwasher.  When I read his (floating) nametag, I couldn't believe my eyes: his name is Waylon Fairchild!  Could he be Thom's long-lost relative?  Those thin lips, that hair falling in the eyes - there's definitely a family resemblance.

(In the background, Sophie Miguel hides behind the doorframe while contemplating her next act of vandalism.)

Thomas spots Waylon as he's coming in from the yard.  He does a double-take and looks up at the stranger's face.

Waylon also thinks that Thomas looks familiar, but he can't quite place him.

Perhaps Thomas has mugged him, before?

This starts a long conversation about crime, the police, and prison.  Thomas listens politely, then changes the subject to his newfound hobby, games.  Waylon nods, says something about game controllers, then goes straight back to crime.  Finally, Thomas loses patience.  He folds his arms and says quite sternly that they did not meet in jail!

Speaking of games, Thomas's enthusiasm has rubbed off on George.  He takes a handheld game to work.  His boss spots him playing with it over the lunch break.

George has nothing to hide, so he explains the game to his boss, and mentions the fun he has playing with his friend.

Gaming on the job doesn't hurt George's prospects, at all - he's promoted to Dive Master!  At last, he can start exploring the underwater world.

Feeling flush after his recent promotion, George gives a generous tip to the repairman who is (maybe) Thom's relative and (probably) an ex-con.

George also takes a turn tending the trees.  But first, he strikes a heroic pose with the shears.

While he's pruning, George is approached by a stranger who invites him to join a gaming club.  A member must have overheard him talking to his boss, today.

I'd just like to talk for a moment about “best-laid plans of Simmers.”  I had intended for George to be quiet and studious, and for Thomas to be silly and playful.  I'm glad that Thom's hobby is games, since it suits his character design.  But even though I'm playing according to their wants, they've turned out to be the opposite of what I had planned: Thomas is the nervous type who likes to stay at home, whereas George is racking up the hobby points and likes to party nearly-naked.

Meanwhile, Thomas is facing a crisis in the restaurant: Chef Lefromage needs to prepare a fancy meal for the critic who has just arrived, but his prep-staff have all gone home!  Can he count on Thomas?

Thomas loves to cook, so he's confident that he can help “The Big Cheese,” as he's called by his staff.  Thomas calls upon the skills he's gained from cooking at home, and together they make a delicious meal.  Lefromage is so grateful, he shares some of his secret kitchen techniques with Thomas.

Lefromage's tutoring gives Thomas the confidence to leave behind those greasy dishes - he takes a job as a drive-through clerk!  He's still not cooking, but at least he's gaining some experience in customer service.  A co-worker named Ash Wong tags along with Thomas.

It's been a long day for Thomas.  He feels so tired after dinner, he excuses himself to go to bed.  Ash's gaze lingers on Thomas as he trudges up the stairs.

I wondered about that, so I took a quick peek at Ash's panel, and this is what I saw!  Ash is a Romance Sim whose intentions towards Thomas are not entirely honourable.  Sure, he wants to be friends with Thomas, but he has other things on his mind, too.

After dinner, Ash flips through the cooking magazine so that he will know exactly the same recipes that Thomas does.  He becomes so absorbed, he doesn't notice a strange animal approach the front door.  It stands still as it stares inside, as though it is patiently waiting for someone.

In his bedroom, Thomas suddenly wakes up.  Did George call for him?  He heads downstairs to find out.  As he walks by the front door, Thomas notices the strange dog.  He throws on his coat and greets the animal.

Thomas admires its bright, intelligent eyes.  This is no ordinary stray.  Maybe this dog is the special pet that Thomas has been looking for!

Or maybe not.  Thomas gives up and goes back to bed.

Thank you for reading!
