I'm flailing about the bus trip now. I'm going to be getting into the centre of Birmingham at 4.10 am. Alone. I don't know the city, I amn't meeting anyone when I get there* and I have no idea how much it'll cost to get a taxi out to the hotel (not that I can actually afford to get a taxi out to the hotel but I'll burn that bridge when I get to it

I've just had a quick dig around and apparently the coach station (as long as it's Birmingham Central Coach Station, Oxford Street you're going to) is about five minutes' walk from Birmingham New Street rail station and presumably less time than that by taxi, if there are any around at that time in the morning. I know it all costs money, but it should be a lot cheaper than getting a taxi to the hotel. The first train so far as I can see from there to B'ham International station is at 5.29, fare £3.10.
Hmm. Edited because it looks as though I am giving you journey directions, when my intention was to get you safely to somewhere (ie the rail station) where there would be other people, asap!
