The six hundred plus years old Inca city, hidden away in the mountains until its rediscovery in 1911 by American explorer Hiram Bingham, is detariorating rapidly under its annual influx of 400,000 tourists, or so says Unesco. The locals, of course, disagree - a few years ago, a train line was installed to bring tourists to within walking distance of this historical site, significantly shortening the previous four day hike on foot.
I say to the Peruvian authorities: take away the damn train bringing in the lazy tourists, and make this wonderful product of human endeavour the Holy Grail it was for so long again.
