Ira

I've been meaning to bitch about this for a week now.
When I went to see This American Life Live last Thursday, it was a really great show. Except I learned two disturbing facts about Ira Glass

1) His hero is Terry Gross; listening to her inspired him to get into radio.
2) He religiously watches the OC, even the later seasons.

I don't really care that much about #2, it's more funny than anything else. #1 is just bad and upsetting. I hate Fresh Air more than pretty much anything on radio (although On Point is quickly slipping down to the bottom of my list).

Jay had a really brilliant idea. He's going to do a spoof of all the NPR shows he hates by combining them all. We could call a random town in Nebraska (Michael Feldman style) and ask the person who answers, "Where do YOU go TO school and HOW do you get THERE? What do you THINK of school? Should goats ATTEND school TOO?" (Tom Ashbrook style, stressing random ass unimportant words). And then maybe we can ask the person to tell us more about their child who was recently killed in a car accident, and ask them if that tragedy made their work more beautiful (Terry Gross style). Then maybe we could laugh maniacally about something that went wrong with the car (Car Talk style).

Ok, maybe that's funnier if you say it out loud instead of write it.

My favorite is when Tom Ashbrook has a guest-- let's say Britney Spears. His questions that are supposed to be thought provoking and get you to call in will be "Do you LISTEN to Britney SPEARS often? Has SHE changed YOUR life? Do you OWN more than ONE album?" As if he wants me to call in and answer his questions! but clearly the only interesting answer would be if Britney Spears actually did change my life. No one would want to hear my call if I just called in and said I never listen to her and she has had no impact on me whatsoever.

Ahh, and this is supposed to be 'intelligent companionship'???
