September's here. Instead of being sunny, leafy, fresh, and new it's cloudy, cold, guttery, and cold. Does this schizophrenic sphere upon which we tread have no mercy for scared little children in cheap backpacks stumbling off for the first time to institutes of lower eduction? I'm sure Blake has written a rhyme on this very subject.
On the bright side today I read that the province of Ontario is going to start offering $20,000 cash prizes for excellence in university teaching (haha PP--that's what you get for leaving). Apparently 100 prizes across the province. How desperate is our teaching situation when quality education is motivated by a lottery? Any established prof making between $67,000 - $122,000 (stat from article) who doesn't donate the money to a good social program is a total dink. Which I'm sure the gov't is counting on. And how are they going to judge this? What if I start off a first lecture saying, "all right kids, $5,000 in cash is your cut if you nominate me for this bastard." Corporate capitalism, start your engines!
