Glósóli from the Sigur Rós album Takk
I love this. The whole album really appeals to me on many levels and it's been a fairly constant presence on my MP3 player since it came out (gosh, was it really nearly five years ago?). Glósóli is my favourite track on the album, I like the ethereal sound of Jónsi Birgisson's voice and the guitar.
God is a Bullet from the Concrete Blonde album Still In Hollywood
This is a live version and superior to the version on Free, IMO. David introduced me to Concrete Blonde when we first met and this album always reminds me of the early stages of our relationship. I think Johnette Napolitano has a wonderfully emotive voice and I love the way she sings with such passion on this track. She introduces it with "This is an old song...Jim [Mankey, guitarist]...this is for the Los Angeles Police Department!" which makes the chorus even more resonant: "Shoot straight from the hip, yeah/ Gone forever in a trigger slip/ Well, it could have been/ It could have been your brother/ Shoot straight shoot to kill, yeah/Blame each other, well, blame yourselves, you know/ God is a bullet have mercy on us everyone"
God Bless Mom from The Frames album Dance the Devil
I don't tremendously like the lyrics to this but I really like the tune and the way they perform it. Glen Hansard's voice has been a favourite of mine since I was in my early teens and heard tracks from The Frames debut album Fitzcarraldo on Dave Fanning's evening show on 2FM. Dave Fanning introduced me to a sizeable number of my favourite artists in my formative years - leading me onto my next track
Girl from the Tori Amos album Little Earthuakes
The first time I ever heard Tori Amos was when I was studying for my Junior Certificate, so the spring/summer of 1992, and I was captivated intitally by Silent All These Years. I still listen to Tori Amos quite a lot of there are various of her songs that speak to me of events in my own life but I can remember being grabbed as a teenager by the line "she's been everybody's else's girl/maybe one day she'll be her own" from Girl.
Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac. I don't know when this was originally released, it's one of those songs that I seem to have known and liked forever. OK, now that I've gone and looked it up I see I probably have known it forever, it was released as a single in late 1976 and appeared on their Rumours album of '77 (I was born July '77). Some more trivia about this track - it's one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. It's been covered by The Cranberries, Thunder, Wilson Phillips (bit limp) and various others but I like Fleetwood Mac best :)
