The initial pain may fade with time, so that it turns into a dull ache, ever-present, as opposed to the sharp, vicious continuous pang it begins as. Time is praised for its ability to heal, but it does something else as well, it steals, it takes.

It's a quarter of a century later and if Bruce were to hear his parents' voices on the street, he's not sure he would recognize them. Of course, he could easily remember his mother's kind words or his father's favorite sayings, but their voice, the tone and cadence? They had all but faded from Bruce's memory with time.

As he watched a rare news clip where Thomas and Martha Wayne answered a few questions together with short quips and laughter, Bruce found he could hardly breathe. His mother sounded nothing like he recalled, his father's laugh was so different to what he remembered. Tears rolled down Bruce's face as he replayed the footage over and over, until he lost count of how many times he watched it. All the while trying to memorize the sound of their voices once again.
