FBI Agent Steve Trevor, handpicked by Hoover, was an honorable man, an honest one, too, but aside from that he had awful bad luck and often wondered two things: why he loved his chosen profession when life insisted on punishing him for it and why he fell in love with a woman he couldn't possibly have a future with.

That she was know as 'The Princess' should have clued him in from the beginning, but what he knew now that he didn't then (but ultimately didn't matter) was that her only other choice at the time was to let her sisters starve to death and Diana wasn't about to let that happen, so she took the only remaining option available to her, she started bootlegging.

They had shared one kiss two nights ago when they talked lovestruck nonsense (like leaving everything behind and running away to Arizona) before he knew the truth, but now Agent Trevor stood at the narrow back entrance, weapon loaded, ax in hand, heart in pieces, ready to break down the door and arrest 'his angel' once the signal was given because it was his job to do so.

Steve would have been the kind of agent that Hoover would choose, because he'd have potential agents screened in his office for their good looks.
