The airplane ride back to the States had seemed longer than all his time in the cave. He was anxious to get back to work, to improve the arc reactor he built with spare parts, and above all else, to see Pepper again.
Tony had thought of her often. He was surprised by how much, actually.
...
"You spoke her name numerous times while you were unconscious," Yinsen said.
Tony tried to play it off, saying she was just some girl.
"Some girl," the older man repeated, then smirked, "I'm sure she must be if the great Tony Stark bothered to remember her name."
It appeared his reputation had followed him into that dark, dreary cave and Tony simply laughed. "Are we going to talk about girls, Yinsen, or we going to build this thing?"
...
When Rhodey ran to him across the sand, Tony, lips cracked, mouth dry, throat parched, only had two words for him. "Where's Pepper?" he croaked, the words inaudible.
"How was the fun-vee?" Rhodey asked, not having heard Tony's question. "Next time you ride with me, all right?"
It wasn't until hours later, once Tony had gotten cleaned up and into the black, fitted suit Pepper sent that he began to feel like himself again.
"I called Pepper," Rhodey said and Tony's ears perked up. "She'll be waiting with Happy and the car when we land."
"Right," he grinned, his voice casual, but even the scotch he drank couldn't calm his nerves.
...
It should have been surreal when Tony was finally standing across from her, but it wasn't. He felt as though nothing had happened and he had never been gone.
"Your eyes are red. Tears for your long lost boss?"
"Tears of joy," Pepper said and Tony was struck by the unexpected tug at his heartstrings, until she added, "I hate job hunting."
"Yeah, well, vacation's over," Tony replied smoothly and with that - the easy repartee that had always been a staple of their relationship - they were really back to normal and Tony realized it wasn't what he had hoped for. After everything he'd been through, he could admit - if only to himself - that he didn't want things as they had been, he wanted more from her.
